Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the standard Chinese term for chopsticks?

Answer: Kuaizi

Chopsticks traditionally were made of bamboo or wood. However, with modern materials, plastic and metal are now commonplace. I could never get to grips with chopsticks. The method I tried is this:

Place the bottom chopstick in the valley between your thumb and index finger, resting it on the tip of your ring finger. Press down with your thumb across the middle for stability.

Hold the top chopstick like a pencil, gripping it between the pad of your thumb and the tips of your index and middle fingers for better control.

Keep the bottom chopstick stationary and use the top one to grip food like tongs. Practice moving it to gain confidence and skill.
2. What is the main ingredient of rum?

Answer: Sugarcane

Rum is made from sugarcane or its byproduct molasses. One way the rum is made is by the juice from the sugarcane which is extracted, which is then fermented and distilled. Molasses is the by-product of sugar production and can be a key ingredient in many types of rums.

Rum originated in the Caribbean in the 17th century and was very popular with pirates and the British navy, where it was rationed to its sailors. Nowadays, it's not just the Caribbean that produces rum. In fact, any country that produces sugar now makes rum.

Answer: Boiled sweets

Spangles were a boiled type of sweet that was produced in the UK by Mars Ltd. Originally the fruit flavours were strawberry, blackcurrant, orange, pineapple, lemon and lime, and cola. A few years later, "Old English" Spangles were also produced, which included butterscotch, liquorice, and pear drop.

The sweets were in the shape of a square and were translucent. These boiled sweets were available from the 1950s until the early part of the 1980s, when production stopped. Spangles returned in 1995, but it was a short reprieve.
4. What is the name of the accessory used to play a guitar, to pluck the strings?

Answer: Plectrum

The plectrum is also known as a pick. These come in a variety of shapes and thicknesses. Plectrums are made from a variety of materials, but plastic is very common. Depending on the thickness and what it's made from, the plectrum can alter the tone of the guitar. Similar to plectrums, fingerpicks are also used by many guitarists.

6. What are the dots on a domino called?

Answer: Pips

Each domino has a line through the middle to make two squares. Every domino has a certain number of spots or can be a blank or even a blank and a spot. The numbers range from blank-blank, blank plus one spot, one-one, blank plus two spots and so on. The highest domino would be six-six. So as you can tell, there is quite a large combination. The domino is longer than it is wide.

The cheapest dominoes are made from synthetic materials, but ivory, wood, and bone are all available depending on how much you want to spend. If you want to know more about how the game is played, it's well worth looking into the game online.

And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust
That really drives you insane."

It's fun; try it to the music!
