Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When studying games, there is broad agreement among researchers about several basic characteristics. Which of the following is one characteristic of a game?

Answer: Demarcation in space and time

A game is pre-delimited either in space or in time. A game has boundaries whose function is to define where reality ends and where the game begins. The space may be a stadium, a yard, or a checkerboard, for example, while the time frame may be 90 minutes or, for instance, until Mom calls her children up to eat dinner.

Regarding the incorrect answers: a game's primary goal is not to actualize change in the real world. Secondly, every game has rules, which may be more flexible or more rigid depending on the spirit of the game. Finally, the course and outcome of the game are not predetermined. The participants have some ability to influence the course or the result of the game.
2. What is the depth threshold that defines the deep sea?

Answer: Under 200 meters (656 ft)

This refers to the deep parts of the ocean where sunlight hardly reaches. In deep areas, the sea becomes dark, very cold, and the pressure is extremely high. In the depths live special creatures that have adapted to darkness, sometimes by producing their own light or surviving with very little food, since there are almost no plants that can perform photosynthesis there. In short, this is the deepest and least explored region of the ocean.

At depths of roughly 200-1000 meters, sunlight is very weak and only partial light may penetrate. Many marine organisms live in this zone because it still provides some light and food sources. Below about 1000 meters, the ocean is considered effectively dark.
3. In which of the following films does the main character suffer from sex addiction?

Answer: Shame (2011)

In this underrated film by Steve McQueen, the main character, Brandon (Michael Fassbender), is a thirty-something New Yorker with a respectable job who suffers from a psychological condition characterized by persistent sexual fantasies, repetitive sexual urges, and excessive engagement in sexual behavior such as pornography use and promiscuity.

The movie received unusual NC-17 rating for some explicit sexual content. Both "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Smashed" revolve around alcohol addiction, while "Eyes Wide Shut" is not about addiction.
4. Somewhat ironically, which Italian football (soccer) team is named after the goddess of youth in Roman mythology?

Answer: Juventus

Juventus FC is a football team based in Turin, in the region of Piedmont, Italy. Founded in 1897 by a group of young students, the club chose the name Juventus FC, derived from Juventas, the Roman goddess of youth. Although she is equivalent to the Greek goddess Hebe, the Romans did not develop the same myths around her. Instead, Juventas was regarded as one of the more abstract Roman deities, a personification of youth itself. Her role was to protect young men, including those serving in the army. In Roman custom, when a young man wore the toga virilis for the first time-marking his transition to adulthood-he would make a financial offering to the goddess at her temple.

Ironically, despite the meaning of the name, the club's fans often call the team the Old Lady (la Vecchia Signora).
5. According to Anaximander, what is the beginning ("arche" in Ancient Greek) of all things?

Answer: Apeiron

Apeiron refers to something undefined and difficult to characterize. It is not a substance that is known or encountered in everyday experience, nor does it resemble anything directly perceived by the senses. Precisely for this reason, it can serve as an explanation for the origin and nature of the tangible world that is perceived by the senses. The Apeiron is not identical with the things we experience, but it is the underlying source from which they arise.

From this solution emerges a distinction between phenomenon (the thing as it appears to us) and reality (the thing as it truly is). While this distinction is formulated in later philosophy, it helps to clarify Anaximander's insight that sensory appearances do not reveal ultimate reality. According to this view, things are not exactly as they seem to the senses. In a deeper sense, everything is grounded in the Apeiron, from which all things emerge and to which they ultimately return.
6. Which text ends with these words?: "And in my final moment, may I hear You whisper: "When you made My people smile, you made Me smile."

Answer: The Clown's Prayer

The author of the prayer is unknown. Written in poetic form, it has been used by comedians as a source of inspiration and motivation. Comedians such as Chris Farley were known to carry a copy of the prayer in their wallets. Dick Van Dyke recited the prayer at the funeral of his fellow comedian Stan Laurel.

"The Clown's Prayer" is an important tradition of Clowns International, the world's oldest clown organization, which was founded in 1946. It is recited every year at the Grimaldi Memorial Service, held on the first Sunday of February at All Saints Church in London. The ceremony honors Joseph Grimaldi, widely regarded as the father of modern clowning.

Another version of the prayer is believed to have been written by Walter Grogan and published in 1907 in "The Pall Mall Magazine."
7. A mother trapped in the memories of her youth, her fragile daughter with a slight limp who seldom leaves the safety of home, the son who has the soul of a poet but works in a shoe warehouse, and his coworker who comes over for dinner. Which Tennessee Williams play am I?

Answer: The Glass Menagerie

Probably Tennessee Williams' most personal play. Tom, the poetic dreamer, is based on Williams himself. Amanda is modeled after his real-life mother, and the shy, delicate Laura is inspired by his beloved sister, who was eventually institutionalized. "The Glass Menagerie" premiered in 1944 and was the second of Williams' plays to be professionally produced and performed on stage.
8. As part of Mao Zedong's "Great Leap Forward" industrialization campaign, four "pests" were targeted as threats to public hygiene and economic development in China: rats, flies, mosquitoes, and which fourth creature?

Answer: Sparrows

The Eliminate Sparrows Campaign was launched in 1958 as part of Mao's effort to propel China's economy into the 20th century. Mao and his top advisers claimed that sparrows consumed thousands of tons of grain-grain that, in their eyes, could instead feed the Chinese people and support the rapid industrialization meant to lift China to the level of Western powers.

The campaign was both effective and devastating. Farmers swept through the countryside, destroying nests, smashing eggs, and driving flocks of sparrows into exhaustion by banging pots and pans. By 1959, sparrows had been nearly wiped out across China. But the authorities failed to take into account one crucial fact: sparrows also fed on insects. With the birds gone, swarms of locusts descended on the crops, devastating the harvest and worsening food shortages. Between 1958 and 1961, during the Great Leap Forward, more than 30 million Chinese died of starvation.
9. In the "Book of Esther", to whom does the statement "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor" refer?

Answer: Mordecai

The sleep of Ahasuerus was disturbed. The Persian king asked to have the "Book of Chronicles of Persia" read to him. When the record was opened, it happened to contain the account of how Mordecai had saved the king from an assassination plot by exposing the conspiracy. The king asked whether Mordecai had been rewarded for this loyalty and was told that he had not. At that moment, Haman arrived at the palace, intending to request permission to execute Mordecai.

The king asked Haman what should be done for the man whom the king wished to honor. Haman, thinking the king meant to honor him, suggested royal honors such as dressing the man in royal garments, placing him on the king's horse, and leading him through the city while proclaiming, "Thus shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor." The king ordered Haman to carry out this honor for Mordecai, which humiliated Haman. Later, Esther revealed her Jewish identity to the king and asked him to save her people, identifying Haman as the man responsible for the decree to destroy them.

The king became angry and ordered that Haman be executed on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai. Haman was later hanged on that gallows. The king then issued a new decree allowing the Jews to defend themselves against their enemies. The "Book of Esther" ends with the victory of the Jews over those who sought to harm them, and with the establishment of the celebration of Purim as a remembrance of the salvation.
10. There are seven countries in Central America, and only one of their capital cities has a coastline. Which capital city is it?

Answer: Panama City

The capital of the Panama was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. Its location on the Pacific coast made it an important trading hub during the Spanish colonial period, especially for the transport of silver and goods from South America across the isthmus to the Caribbean. For this reason, the city became one of the most significant commercial centers in Spanish America. Today, it is mainly associated with the Panama Canal.

There are several reasons why some countries choose to place their capital cities away from the coast. The former capital of Belize was Belize City, located on the Caribbean coast. After Hurricane Hattie struck in 1961, destroying an estimated 70% of the city and leaving thousands homeless, the government decided to move the capital inland. The new capital, Belmopan, was built in a safer location away from the coast.

The location of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, is result of several factors: its relatively favorable highland climate, protection from pirate raids that were common along the Caribbean coast, and its historical role as an important center for silver and gold mining.

There were several reasons for choosing San José as the capital of Costa Rica in 1823. These included its central location in the Central Valley and its growing economic importance during the 19th century. Moreover, political factors also played a role. After the independence from Spain in 1821, a dispute arose over whether Costa Rica should join the Mexican Empire. San José, along with Alajuela, supported maintaining independence from Mexico, while Cartago and Heredia supported union with the empire. This conflict led to the Battle of Ochomogo, after which San José emerged as the dominant political center and became the capital.
