3. Known as the first man to run the mile in less than four minutes, Sir Roger Bannister made history with a time of 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. This happened on May 6, 1954. What was Roger Bannister's middle name?

Answer: Gilbert

On May 6, 1954 Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister did in fact break the four minute mile with a recorded time of 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. The day had been very windy with 25 mile per hour (40 km/h) winds. Mr. Bannister was not going to run that day, due to the winds, and said he would try again another time. Before the race was to begin, the winds died down and Roger Bannister decided that he would make his attempt.

His time became a new World Record on that day. Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister wrote his memoirs in 1955, titled "The Four Minute Mile"
4. In 1656, Christiaan Huygens developed the first pendulum clock, which was a prototype for the larger grandfather clock. Whose discovery of the pendulum did Huygens apply when he developed the grandfather clock?

Answer: Galileo Galilei

Back in 1582, Galileo Galilei had discovered that time could be kept through the use of a pendulum. He studied the idea of such clocks and drew the first designs for what is known as a grandfather clock today. Christiaan Huygens studied what Galileo Galilei had drawn and then was able to develop the first pendulum clock.

The first pendulum clocks hung on the wall and were referred to as "wags-on-the-wall" because of their short pendulums. Eventually, in 1670 William Clement re-designed the pendulums, making them longer, which made the clocks keep time within seconds of accuracy.
5. Besides Robert Colbert and Whit Bissell, who else starred in the U.S. television show known as "The Time Tunnel"?

Answer: James Darren

"The Time Tunnel" was created by Irwin Allen in 1966. The television show starred James Darren, Robert Colbert and Whit Bissell. James Darren's character, physicist Dr. Tony Newman, went into the "Time Tunnel" and was projected back in time, unable to return.

His assistant, Dr. Doug Phillips (Robert Colbert) attempted to get him back, but was also lost in time with Dr. Newman. Despite their attempts to prevent the sinking of the Titanic, for example, they found that they could not change the course of history at all.
6. We set our clocks according to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), but exactly how many (full hour) time zones are there?

Answer: 25

The World Time Zones are divided into 25 integers. Each zone is measured with relativity to Greenwich, England and run from -12 to +12. The zones are each 15 degrees of longitude measuring east and west from the Prime Meridian of the world at Greenwich, England. Time zones are civilian designated (usually by three letter abbreviations for each), such as EST for Eastern and as military (and aviation) phonetic designations, each by letter, such as Z for Zulu.
In some cases, some countries adopt non-standard time zones; offset from the normal time zone, usually by thirty minutes, such as Newfoundland, Canada.
7. This novella was written by H. G. Wells and popularized the idea of time travel. Name that book!

Answer: The Time Machine

In 1895, H.G. Wells published his novella titled "The Time Machine". It was later made into two or more feature films. There were also television versions of "The Time Machine" and countless comic book versions and adaptations. This book has been credited with making the idea of time travel very popular. Wells was the first to coin the term "time machine" which is now used all over the world to describe the concept of traveling through time.

The Clock That Went Backward was written by Edward Page Mitchell. Mark Twain is the author of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". The author of "Memoirs of the Twentieth Century" was Samuel Madden.
8. Hourglasses can be used to measure approximate time, but there are large sand glasses that can actually measure time frames of much more than a mere hour. Where would you travel to in order to see the "Timewheel"?

Answer: Budapest, Hungary

The "Timewheel" is a giant sand glass located in Budapest, Hungary. Janos Herner had the idea of this creation and Istvan Janaky created it. The "Timewheel" was unveiled on the 1st of May, 2004, commemorating the enlargement of the European Union which admitted Hungary at this time. This magnificent structure is made of granite, steel and glass. It weighs a massive 60 tons with glass granules being used instead of sand. The granules flow from the top to the bottom of the "Timewheel" through the course of one year. At midnight, New Year's Eve, the last bits of granules flow from the upper chamber to the lower glass chamber and then the "Timewheel" is turned 180 degrees to begin the next year.

In Nima, Japan at the sand museum, you can see the six meter high sand glass that has a one year running time. It is among the largest of the world's chronometers.

At the Red Square in Moscow, stands an 11.9 meter high sand glass, weighing 40 tons.

Made in Hamburg, Germany, in 1922, is one of the smallest sandglasses in the world. It is only 2.4 centimeters high and the sand passes in less than five seconds.
9. Does the world's solar time ever get reset?

Answer: Yes

Every four years the world has what is called a leap year. The month of February is given an extra day (29 days instead of 28 days) extending the number of days in the leap year to 366. This is done to compensate for the approximate 6 hours of a solar year that get lost during the three previous years of 365 days each.
10. Westinghouse created a "time capsule" for the 1939 New York World's Fair. What name was given to the alloy that was created as the capsule?

Answer: Cupaloy

The "time capsule" created by Westinghouse for the 1939 New York World's Fair was made from an alloy of copper, chromium and silver. Westinghouse named this alloy "Cupaloy", making the claim that its strength was the same as that of mild steel. The "time capsule" had everyday items such as a doll, a spool of thread, a "Book of Records" (describing the capsule and its creators), a microscope, an almanac, a dictionary and much more placed inside of it. This capsule is not to be opened until the year 6939.
