Saharan silver ants have silver hairs which act as heat shields in the desert climate. This allows them to forage during the hottest time of day. The silver hairs cool the ant in two primary ways. The triangular shape of the hairs is highly effective to deflect the sunlight, minimising the amount of heat absorption.

The hairs also maximize the thermal emissivity, allowing it to offload heat efficiently from the body. The cooling effect can reduce the ant's body temperature by 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.

Another offensive was repelled by the Vietnamese in 1285. During the fourth invasion (1287-1288) the Vietnamese force, led by Tran Hung Dao, decisively defeated the Mongol fleet at Battle of Bach Dang, and finally ended the Mongol attempts to capture Vietnam.
