1. What sort of animal is a brolga?

Answer: A bird

The brolga is one of the two types of cranes that are found in eastern Australia and New Guinea. The feathers are grey with black feathers on the wingtips and orange-red feathers on the head. The bird is largely considered not endangered.
2. In which Olympics were women first allowed to compete in track-and-field events?

Answer: 1928 Amsterdam

In 1928 there were five track-and-field events for women at these Olympics including the 800 meter race. After this race several contestants collapsed. As a result it was decided that women didn't have the endurance to compete in races more than 200 meters and it wasn't until 1964 that a longer race, the 400 meter race, appeared.
3. L. Frank Baum wrote 14 novels about the World of Oz. Which of the following was NOT one of them?

Answer: The Cowardly Lion of Oz

Lyman Frank Baum was born in 1856 in Chittenango, NY. The first of Baum's Oz books, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', was published in 1900. The last book was 'Glinda of Oz'. It was published in 1920, a year after Baum's death. While Baum wrote several books about a particular character, he did not write one including the Cowardly Lion in the title. Actor and comedian Bert Lahr portrayed the Lion in the 1939 MGM movie adaptation.
4. Who were Gwynne Owen Evans and Peter Anthony Allen?

Answer: Last men executed in Britain

They were executed at 8.00 AM on 13 August 1964, for the murder of John West, a van driver who they had killed during a robbery. The two men had each blamed the other during the trial but the jury found both men guilty. Capital punishment was abolished in the United Kingdom in 1965. This particular case came at a time when public opinion was starting to change.

The children were Lir's daughter, Fionuala, and her three little brothers named Aed, Fiachra and Conn. They were turned into swans by Aeife, their father's second wife who was jealous of the children. The curse lasted for 900 years. Lir's first wife and second wife were sisters, both being daughters of Bodb.

While vice president, Johnson had served as chair of the National Aeronautics and Space Council. Johnson had suggested to Kennedy the goal of having an American astronaut walking on the moon during the 1960s.

Answer: 160,000

The convicts had arrived in various Australian colonies between 1788 and 1868. The last of the convicts, 451 prisoners including 60 Fenian agitators, arrived in Western Australia on 10 January 1868. Many of the criminals had been transported from Great Britain for petty crimes including theft.

In the last few decades public opinion in Australia had gradually turned against transportation of convicts.
9. Which country had an 'Age of Settlement' that occurred between 874-930 AD?

Answer: Iceland

The main source for information about the early years in Iceland is 'The Book of Settlements' (Landnamabok) which was written in about the 12th century. This book states that Ingolfur Arnarson was the first settler. Modern historians cite a variety of reasons for Norse settlement including a shortage of farmable land in Scandinavia.

Answer: Five

Peru has borders with Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador. The west coast of Peru borders the Pacific Ocean. Of the countries that Peru borders, the shortest border is with Chile. Peru's longest border is shared with Brazil. In total, Peru covers slightly less than 500,000 square miles.
