On the night of June 21 1942 a Japanese submarine fired 17 bombs that hit Fort Stevens south of the mouth of the Columbia River; thereby making the Oregon coast one of only a very few places in the continental United States to be struck by enemy fire.

After the death of her only child and her husband, a spiritualist told her to build the mansion to assuage the deaths of the people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.

Yuma was a model facility for its time, providing inmates with medical care, educational opportunities, and even a library. He was convicted on May 5, 1998 and is currently serving four life sentences. His crime spree lasted nearly two decades, targeting universities and airlines. Ultimately three people were killed and 23 were wounded.
