Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two unrelated venomous snake species, one from North America, the other from Australia, share the same common name. What is it?

Answer: Copperhead

The eastern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) belongs to the subfamily Crotalinae (the pit vipers) of the family Viperidae, which also includes rattlesnakes. It is a stout-bodied snake, generally no longer than 1 m (3.2 ft), whose reddish or tan skin is overlaid by darker, hourglass-shaped markings. The eastern copperhead is found in woodlands in most of the eastern US (with the exception of Florida), as far north as southern New England. Though bites from this snake can be very painful and cause tissue and other damage, its venom is very rarely fatal.

The three species of Australian copperhead (Austrelaps sp.) are members of the family Elapidae that inhabit the temperate areas of southern and eastern Australia. In spite of its common name, this snake - which is medium-sized and rather slender-bodied - comes in a variety of colours, and its head is not always copper-coloured. Though not as venomous as infamous Australian snakes like the taipan or the eastern brown snake, the Australian copperhead's venom is much more powerful than that of its American counterpart, and an untreated bite can easily kill a human adult.

The moccasin (closely related to the American copperhead) and the fer-de-lance are also pit vipers, while the boomslang is one of the few dangerously venomous members of the family Colubridae.

2. What do Barney, an eggplant, and Tinky Winky have in common from these choices?

Answer: An Oprah Winfrey movie

Barney, an eggplant, and Tinky Winky are all purple and Oprah Winfrey's first movie as an actress was 1985's "The Color Purple". Winfrey was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the movie. Whoopi Goldberg was also in the movie and nominated for the Best Actress Oscar. Neither won. The movie made history by being nominated for 11 Oscars and winning zero. The movie tells the story of Celie Harris, a young African American girl growing up in early 20th century Georgia. The movie deals with many taboo topics including pedophilia, incest, and domestic violence, along with poverty, racism, and sexism.

Although Barney and Tinky Winky are fictional characters, an eggplant is real. None of the three are related to Saturn. None of the three are titles of rock songs.

This question was painted into the quiz using only shades of purple by Phoenix Rising member tazman661.
3. Barbara Kingsolver's novel "Demon Copperhead" was inspired by a novel by which author?

Answer: Charles Dickens

The 2022 Kingsolver novel follows a young man, Damon, whose first name and patrilineal red hair earn him the nickname "Demon Copperhead". His fortunes fall and rise in Appalachia, bedeviled by poverty, child abuse, the foster care system, and opioids. Kingsolver was apparently inspired to write the tale patterned after "David Copperfield" while staying in a British inn where Dickens once wrote.

Player pusdoc scribed this question into the quiz for Phoenix Rising.
4. In the 2023 TV series "Tulsa King", who plays the eponymous role?

Answer: Sylvester Stallone

In this series, Stallone's character Dwight Manfredi returns to the New York crime family after taking a 25-year jail sentence for taking a hit for the family. The family find no place for him in New York but instead 'banish' him to Tulsa to set up a racket in a city with little organised crime. The drama is infused with comedy, but the biggest attraction is how 76-year-old Stallone still has the charisma and acting chops to carry an entire show.

This question was streamed into the quiz by Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1.
5. Which indefinite pronoun links the 2014 Oscar-nominated film starring Eddie Redmayne and the comedy-drama film that won the Oscar's Best Picture award in 2023?

Answer: Everything

"The Theory of Everything" (2014) tells the remarkable life of English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. The character was played by Eddie Redmayne, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film was nominated for the Oscar's Best Picture award but lost to "Birdman" (2014).

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" (2022) tells the epic adventures of Chinese-American immigrant Evelyn Wang in parallel universes. The character Evelyn Wang was portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, who won the Best Actress award at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, held in 2023. The film won the Oscar's Best Picture award.

This question was written by Phoenix Rising team member Matthew_07, after watching the two great films.
6. Which of these is the common link between each of the following: Maximus, Khan, Frou Frou, Angus?

Answer: Disney horses

Horses feature prominently in several Disney films. Some of them, like Maximus from "Tangled", are very complicated and expressive characters. Maximus is introduced as the steed of the Captain of the Guards and makes it his personal mission to thwart Flynn Ryder at every turn. Khan is the title character's trusty mount in Disney's "Mulan". Meanwhile, Angus is Merida's faithful companion in "Brave" and Frou Frou makes a minor appearance in "The Aristocats".

Phoenix Rising's JCSon quit horsing around long enough to post this equestrian...er, question.
7. In the video game "Mario Odyssey", which new weapon, and friend, does the intrepid plumber use?

Answer: A special hat

In the video game "Mario Odyssey", Bowser is up to his usual shenanigans of stealing Princess Peach to make her his bride. The tiara that Bowser gives to the princess turns out to actually be sentient and also not thrilled about being kidnapped. Mario teams up with the tiara's hat friend and both set out on a rescue mission. In the game, Mario's hat friend acts like a boomerang to attack enemies or grab items like coins. The hat also allows Mario to take control of several different species of creatures throughout the game, thus gaining their abilities and allowing Mario to accomplish goals he could not normally do.

This Phoenix Rising's question is provided by BigTriviaDawg who loves to knock out Bowser every chance he gets! One would think that after dozens of kidnapping attempts the princess would have better defenses...mama mia!
8. Which actor was the first to win an Oscar for their portrayal of another Oscar winner?

Answer: Cate Blanchett playing Katharine Hepburn

Cate Blanchett was born in Melbourne Australia in 1969 and has had a varied acting career achieving much acclaim. She won her first Academy Award, or Oscar, in 2004 as 'Best Supporting Actress', portraying Katharine Hepburn in the film "The Aviator".

Katharine Hepburn, an American actress, born 1907, was herself an Oscar-winning actress, gaining 12 nominations over her long career. She became the actor with the highest number of Oscars in 1982 when she won her fourth, the 'Best Actress' for "On Golden Pond".

"The Aviator" (2004) was a biographical drama about the life of Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio), also starring Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn and Kate Beckinsale as Ava Gardner. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning five in total.

Phoenix Rising's smpdit awarded herself a pat on the back for completing this question.
9. Prior to the 2020 pandemic which impacted global shipping transportation, what was the world's busiest shipping canal (by tonnage)?

Answer: Kiel Canal

The Kiel Canal in Germany, (formerly the Kaiser-Wilhelm Kanal) is frequented by some 63,000 watercraft each year. The original canal was completed in 1895, but later widened. The canal connects the North Sea to the Baltic Sea, saving cargo ships an estimated 250NM (460km) on the previous journey around the Jutland Peninsula.

The Kiel Canal carries more traffic (per tonnage per year) than the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal combined. The Grand Canal in Venice does not allow passage for cargo ships, and in 2019 implemented a ban on ships carrying 'self-propelled cargo' and weighing over 1,000 tons from entering the famous waterway.

Phoenix Rising's leith90 is a 'self-propelled cargo' and proud of it, although she's yet to visit Venice.
10. The 1932 US Presidential Election saw incumbent Herbert Hoover defeated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a landslide. Of the then 48 states, how many did Hoover win before the other electorates showed their "deep" disdain?

Answer: 6

Republican President Herbert Hoover was "deep-sixed" by the electorate, winning only six Northeastern states. The 1932 elections were held on November 8, during the period later known as the Great Depression (1929-1939).

New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt's victory was the first for the Democrats since Woodrow Wilson in 1916. The Republicans also suffered crushing defeats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Offering his New Deal domestic agenda to combat the effects of the Great Depression, FDR served as the 32nd U.S. President from 1933 until his death in 1945, winning a total of four presidential elections.

While a school student, Phoenix Rising's psnz had the opportunity to focus on U.S. History in the early 20th century.
