Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Formerly known as Ciudad de los Reyes, what 'L' world capital is found on the Pacific coast?

Answer: Lima

The capital city of Peru, Lima is found along the edge of the continent on the Pacific Ocean though many of its inland districts rise in elevation quite quickly (though nowhere near as high in altitude as the rest of Peru, which heads rapidly upward into the Andes).

While it's not the largest city, by population, in South America, Lima happens to be the most populated Spanish-speaking city in the world altogether. It is, in fact, so highly populated that it contains more than one third of Peru's entire population. 'Ciudad de los Reyes', its earlier name, translates to 'City of the Kings' while the typical name, Lima, comes from the Quechuan word 'Limaq', for 'speaker'.
2. Which is the larger of the two?

Answer: Luxembourg

Luxembourg is significantly larger than Liechtenstein, though both are much smaller than most European destinations. The photo here depicts Luxembourg City.

Luxembourg is technically a country (a Grand Duchy, even more technically) and it has an area of just over twenty-five hundred square kilometres. Sitting between France, Belgium, and Germany, the north of the country is quite hilly while the south is in flat lowlands.

Liechtenstein, however, is a Principality and Microstate sitting between Switzerland and Austria amidst the Alps. It's only one hundred sixty square kilometres.
3. Found in the Scottish Highlands, which body of water contains the most water by volume?

Answer: Loch Ness

Loch Ness not only contains more water than any other lake in Scotland, it contains more water than all of the lakes in Scotland combined, and that's a feat since Scotland alone bears more than thirty thousand individual lochs of varying sizes. Loch Ness can be visited by only a short drive out of Inverness, and its picturesque views contain the famous ruins of Urquhart Castle (depicted here).

Not depicted in this photo: The Loch Ness Monster. It might be silly to say (though not if you've been looking for a while), but then again, the legend of Nessie has persisted in this loch for centuries in some shape or form.
4. Containing the city of Arrecife, which of the following is one of the Canary Islands?

Answer: Lanzarote

The furthest east of the Canary Island chain and the closest to the African mainland, the island of Lanzarote became a UNESCO-protected conservation site in the mid-1990s due in part to its unique and unspoiled ecosystem, home to endemic plants and animals due to its remoteness.

The city of Arrecife is its largest population center and it's located on the southeast coast of the island, making it the ideal port of call for boats headed throughout the islands and to both Europe and Africa. At one point in its history, it was a bustling port for shipping while Spain took in items from the New World and around Africa; today it's used more as a tourist destination.
5. Straddling a river in France, which of these famous wine regions contains the cities of Amboise, Tours, and Orléans?

Answer: Loire Valley

Cutting west to east across the middle of France, the Loire Valley follows the Loire River after it turns from north to west in Orléans and continues out to the Atlantic Ocean, taking up about half of the lower course of France's longest waterway. Notably, the Loire Valley is known for its agriculture and viticulture, being famous for a number of French wines grown in stable, pleasant climates. Due in part to the region's general favourability, it's also the home of numerous French châteaux, which dot the valley's rural expanses just outside the cities of Tours, Angers, Orléans, Blois, and others.
6. Quezon City and Manila are both destinations found on what landmass, the largest island of the Philippines?

Answer: Luzon

While the nation of the Philippines contains more than seven thousand islands of various sizes in its archipelago, the island of Luzon is the largest and most frequented because it contains the largest component of the population. Depicted in the photo here is the Mayon Volcano, which reaches an altitude of 2,460m above sea level and overlooks the city of Legazpi. Luzon also contains beautiful coastlines, inland rainforests, and geologically active mountain ranges.
7. Pictured here is Vang Vieng, a picturesque destination in what landlocked Asian nation?

Answer: Laos

A landlocked Southeast Asian nation found between five different countries, Laos is often considered quite remote for foreign travellers, especially with neighbouring Thailand and Vietnam having more traditional vacation spots for the region. This being said, visitors won't be disappointed in the way of authentic experiences as Laos is a country steeped in cultural tradition and natural beauty.

In addition to the historical city of Luang Prabang and the capital of Vientiane, the town of Vang Vieng is known for its karst peaks, rolling landscapes, and adventure sports options-- everything from hot air ballooning to whitewater rafting and climbing.

It's found on the Nam Song River, as seen in the photo here.
8. Which of these four cities is divided into boroughs which include Lambeth and Lewisham?

Answer: London

In addition to the City of London proper, London contains thirty-two distinct boroughs that build outwards from the city centre along the Thames, and this contains well-known districts like Westminster, Kensington, Wandsworth, and Camden, amongst others, all of which are treated as their own cities within the city for the sake of civil development and political division.

The boroughs in the question are found south of the Thames. London, as a whole, is considered the capital of England and was founded by Romans in 47 AD, developing to become a key international destination over time.
9. Latvia borders which other Baltic 'L' nation?

Answer: Lithuania

Both Latvia and Lithuania are Baltic nations, resting on the shores of the Baltic Sea across from Scandinavia. Both countries are densely forested, covered with rolling plateaus of woodlands and snaking rivers, and both have a history of highly-prized conservation efforts.

As such, both of the largest population centres, Riga (for Latvia) and Vilnius (for Lithuania) take in most of their citizens and have long histories with highly-regarded Old Towns. Vilnius, seen here, is home to Baroque cathedrals, palaces, and castles.
10. This image depicts a landmark destination in which 'L' city in the United States?

Answer: Los Angeles

This image depicts Santa Monica Pier, a spot found on the Pacific Coastline in Los Angeles. Las Vegas couldn't be the answer here-- it's in the Mojave Desert much further inland. L.A.'s coast is teeming with landmarks and famous beaches, and the Santa Monica Pier is found between Palisades Park and Santa Monica State Beach to the northwest and Venice Beach to the southeast.

The pier itself, at the end of Colorado Road, is known for its amusement park rides and has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, what with it being near Hollywood and all.
