Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Possibly the most common first line in limericks (can't think why) is "There was a young lady from Bude". In which English county is Bude?

Answer: Cornwall

According to the website "Welcome to Bude", this Cornwall town is home to the "Bude Light Project", a 30 foot high beacon of light, erected to mark the millennium. The website says nothing about the inhabitants being rude, crude, lewd or lacking in clothing.
2. Almost as common as Bude is the good old "There was a young man from Tashkent". From which country did this young man hail?

Answer: Uzbekistan

Mutton features heavily in Uzbek soups, such as Logman (mutton and noodles), Mumpar (mutton and pasta squares), and Shurpa (mutton and potatoes). Ha - Britannica eat your heart out.
3. The "Old Man from Nantucket" is a resident of which US state?

Answer: Massachusetts

I always think that the little facts inside the bottle tops of "Nantucket Nectars" could be more interesting. They tend to be along the lines of "Juice Guy, Petey Sheperd, likes fish". You never see "Juice Guy, Bernie Hill, wears a dress at weekends".
4. Another easy one for US players. From which state did the "Fellow from Kalamazoo" come?

Answer: Michigan

Not being American, I don't really know what and where all the different US states are. However, being a former fan of "Sesame Street", I do know what happened when "the kindly king of Kalamazoo saw Kay the kangaroo's kazoo". So that's all right.
5. As you're probably aware, there was a young man from Biddle. But where might Biddle be?

Answer: Montana, US

Apologies to Biddle residents, but the only information I could find about your town was a weather forecast for 2 August 2002. It seems you can expect a partially cloudy day, with a high of 75 and a low of 59. I suggest a picnic.
6. Edward Lear wrote of an "Old Man from El Hums". Does this place really exist?

Answer: No

It doesn't exist, and I'm quite pleased about it, since the old man "lived upon nothing but crumbs" which seems a terrible shame.
7. The "Young lady from Bangor" could have got up to her various misadventures in several different places. Which of the following does NOT have a Bangor?

Answer: Victoria, Australia

There's a song which goes "Didn't we have a luvverly time, the day we went to Bangor". This relates to the Bangor in Wales.
8. True or False: The "Old Man from Bengal" and the "Old Man from Darjeeling" could have been the same person?

Answer: True

It's true. Darjeeling is a district in West Bengal, India, famous worldwide for tea and tigers.
9. In an age when Europeans knew little of Africa, they were still happy to compose limericks about "A Young Man from Timbuctoo". In which modern African country is Timbuktu (the modern spelling) located?

Answer: Mali

Mali hosted the African Cup of Nations in 2002 (a soccer tournament). It was a bit of a dull tournament to begin with, but became more exciting nearer the end.
10. Finally, a word about "The Young Girl from Cádiz". Which of the following countries has a Cádiz?

Answer: Spain

"El Museo de Cádiz se creó en 1970 para integrar los tradicionales museos provinciales de Bellas Artes y Arqueología cuyos orígenes se remontan a 1847 y 1887 respectivamente." I'm afraid I don't speak Spanish, but I thought I'd pass on this information from the "InfoCadiz" website for those who do.
