When Mao Zedong died in 1976, Hua succeeded him as Chairman of the People's Republic of China -- only to be eased out of power by Deng Xiaoping between 1978 and 1981.

Zhou Xiaozhou served as Hunan first secretary in the 1950s, but was purged at the Lushan plenum in 1959. Zhao Ziyang's rise was based on his success as leader of Sichuan province. Hu Yaobang was born in Hunan but made his career in central organs such as the Communist Youth League and the Central Party School.

Mao Zedong, future Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, was born in the Hunan village of Shaoshan on December 26, 1893. The house in which he was born has been preserved and is now a major tourist attraction.
