Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The Wars of the Roses (1455 to 1487) were fought between two rival branches of the royal Plantagenet family: the Lancastrians, who used a red rose as their emblem, and the Yorkists, who were represented by a white rose. The struggle was rooted in disputes over the rightful succession to the English throne, worsened by political instability, weak monarchs, and powerful noble factions vying for influence. Over three decades, the crown changed hands multiple times, and the country was plunged into repeated bouts of civil war. The conflict ultimately concluded with the rise of the Tudor dynasty, bringing a new era of relative peace and centralized authority in England.

A brief overview of the different battles:

First Battle of St. Albans (May 22, 1455) --This battle marked the beginning of open warfare. The Yorkist forces, led by Richard, Duke of York, clashed with the Lancastrians and managed to capture King Henry VI, dealing a blow to Lancastrian leadership.

Battle of Blore Heath (September 23, 1459) -- A Yorkist army under Lord Salisbury successfully repelled a larger Lancastrian force. The victory demonstrated the Yorkists' military strength early in the conflict.
Battle of Ludford Bridge (October 12-13, 1459) -- Despite having a sizable army, the Yorkists disbanded without fighting when many of their troops defected. The leaders fled, and the Lancastrians temporarily regained control.

Battle of Northampton (July 10, 1460) -- Yorkist forces, led by the Earl of Warwick, defeated the Lancastrians and again took King Henry VI into custody, giving the Yorkists a political advantage.

Battle of Wakefield (December 30, 1460) -- A major setback for the Yorkists. Richard, Duke of York, and his son Edmund were killed in battle, strengthening the Lancastrian position.

Battle of Mortimer's Cross (February 2, 1461) -- Edward, son of the late Duke of York, secured a crucial victory. A rare atmospheric event (a parhelion) before the battle was seen as a favorable omen, boosting Yorkist morale.

Second Battle of St. Alban's (February 17, 1461) -- The Lancastrians defeated the Yorkists and regained custody of King Henry VI, but failed to follow up their success strategically.

Battle of Towton (March 29, 1461) -- The largest and most brutal battle of the wars. Edward IV emerged victorious, solidifying his claim to the throne and forcing the Lancastrians into retreat.

Battle of Hedgeley Moor (April 25, 1464) -- A Yorkist force led by John Neville defeated Lancastrian troops in the north, helping to suppress resistance in that region.

Battle of Hexham (May 15, 1464) -- Another Yorkist triumph in the north. The defeat led to the capture and execution of several key Lancastrian leaders.

Battle of Edgecote (July 24, 1469) -- A rebellion against Edward IV led to this battle. The Yorkists were defeated, and the king was briefly taken prisoner, revealing cracks in his support.

Battle of Losecoat Field (March 12, 1470) -- The Yorkists crushed a Lancastrian uprising. The name of the battle comes from fleeing soldiers discarding their gear to escape more quickly.

Battle of Barnet (April 14, 1471) -- Edward IV returned from exile and defeated the Lancastrians. The influential Earl of Warwick was killed, ending his role as a power broker.

Battle of Tewkesbury (May 4, 1471) -- A decisive Yorkist victory. The Lancastrian heir, Prince Edward, was killed, and Queen Margaret was captured, effectively ending the Lancastrian cause.

Battle of Bosworth Field (August 22, 1485) -- Henry Tudor defeated King Richard III, who was killed in battle. This marked the end of Yorkist rule and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.

Battle of Stoke Field (June 16, 1487) -- Often considered the final battle of the Wars of the Roses. Henry VII defeated Yorkist rebels supporting a pretender, securing his reign and ending the dynastic conflict.

And the listed battles that did NOT occur during the Wars of the Roses:

Battle of Maldon - August 10 or 11, 991
Battle of Stamford Bridge - September 25, 1066
Battle of Hastings - October 14, 1066
