Milestone Mystery Trivia Quiz
For this milestone quiz, I thought I would leave it up to you to figure out how best to celebrate it with me. Can you find the common numerical indicators to group these items into their different categories? Have fun!
Whatever number is given as the power, you multiply the initial number by itself that many times to get the result.
Thus, 2^3 = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8.
2. √64
Answer: Related to '8'
The square root of 64... √64
To find the square root of a number, you need to determine what number multiplied by itself equals the number given. Some of these roots are easier to determine than others, if they are whole numbers:
Oxygen is an element with the symbol 'O' and an atomic number of 8, hence its inclusion in this grouping. It is a colourless, odourless gas that makes up about 21% of Earth's atmosphere. Oxygen is essential for most life forms on Earth because it plays a key role in respiration; a process where cells convert food into energy.
It's also a major component of water (H2O) and is found in many rocks and minerals.
4. Tarantula
Answer: Related to '8'
I could have chosen any arachnid with its eight legs to be included in the '8' grouping. Tarantulas, specifically, have always been a personal favourite of mine, as large, hairy spiders go. There are over 1,000 species of tarantula within the family Theraphosidae, and they can be found throughout Asia, Africa, the Americas, and parts of Europe.
5. 1010000
Answer: Related to '80'
1010000 is binary for the decimal number 80. With only '0' and '1' possible for digits in binary, the numbers get very long very quickly:
So, hopefully you can see that 1000000 (64) plus 10000 (16) adds up to 1010000 (80).
6. Mercury
Answer: Related to '80'
Mercury is an element with the symbol Hg (from the word hydrargyrum, which means 'liquid silver') and atomic number 80, which is why it is part of this grouping. It's a shiny, silver-white metal that is unique because it remains liquid at room temperature. Found naturally in the Earth's crust, mercury is often extracted from a mineral called cinnabar.
It has been used historically in thermometers, barometers, and other scientific instruments due to its ability to expand and contract with temperature changes.
7. Phileas Fogg
Answer: Related to '80'
Phileas Fogg is the protagonist of Jules Verne's 1873 novel, "Around the World in Eighty Days." In the story, Fogg makes a wager with his wealthy friends that he could travel around the globe in 80 days. He takes his valet, named Passepartout, and travels around the globe using various means and methods of transportation, including trains, steamships, and even an elephant. Along the way, he encounters various obstacles, delays, and some interference, finally arriving home a day late... or so he thinks, until he realizes that he had gained a day by traveling eastward across time zones.
8. Octacontagon
Answer: Related to '80'
An octacontagon is a polygon that has 80 sides and 80 angles, which makes it the ideal member of this grouping. And while octacontagon is its official, technical name, it is probably more commonly referred to simply as an 80-gon.
9. DCCC
Answer: Related to '800'
DCCC is 800 in Roman numerals. If you don't already know how the different letters are represented in Roman numerals, here is a quick reminder:
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1,000
So, to represent 800, by the additive conventions of the system, DCCC basically equals 500+100+100+100, or 800.
10. Hawker
Answer: Related to '800'
This is perhaps one of the less obvious choices presented in this quiz, but after the options for '8' and '80' there is really only one grouping for the Hawker to fit into.
The Hawker 800 is a mid-size business jet that can hold 8 passengers. It was first developed by British Aerospace as a development of their BAe 125-700 series, and was put into service in 1983 as the BAe 125-800. Raytheon took over production of the aircraft between 1993 and 2007, after which Hawker Beechcraft became the new owners.
There have been more upgrades since 2007, with the majority of these simply adding suffixes to the Hawker 800 name (such as 800B or 800SP).
11. Charlemagne
Answer: Related to '800'
Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, reigned as King of the Franks from the year 764 until 814. However (and specifically for the purposes of this quiz), he was also crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Leo III in the year 800 AD (on Christmas Day).
12. Toll-free
Answer: Related to '800'
1-800 phone numbers were established as a toll-free service for businesses in 1967 by AT&T, primarily in North America. Initially, the service was expensive for businesses, but in the mid-1980s (with the breakup of AT&T), competing telecommunications companies drove down those costs, making them more accessible.
