1. Runaway slave who found freedom in Portsmouth

Answer: Ona Judge

On May 5, 1961, Alan B. Shepard of Derry, NH became the first American and second human in space, just a few weeks after Yuri Gagarin of Russia. In 1971, he set foot on the Moon as one of the crew of Apollo 14.
4. Author of "Peyton Place"

Answer: Grace Metalious

Grace Metalious's 1956 novel, "Peyton Place," was based on the darker side of life in several New Hampshire towns. It was a huge success, even though (or because) it was considered too daring for a proper novel at the time. It was later made into a movie and a TV series.
5. Creator of Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica

Answer: Bob Montana

Bob Montana based his comic book characters on his experiences at Manchester High School (now Central High), where he graduated, and Haverhill (Massachusetts) High School. The first issue of "Archie" came out in 1942. Montana lived in New Hampshire to the end of his life.

One of the first important figures in the singer-songwriter boom of the 20th century, Tom Rush was born in Portsmouth, NH in 1941. His song "Merrimack County" claims he was born in that county, even though Portsmouth is in Rockingham County. (I guess he liked the sound better.)
