New Hampshire's John Stark, a general in the American Revolution, lived most of his life in Derryfield, now called Manchester. In an 1809 letter, he proposed a toast to veterans: "Live free or die. Death is not the greatest of evils." "Live free or die" is now the state's motto and appears on its license plates.

He signed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which let new states decide whether they would allow slavery. Franklin Pierce University is named for him.

Bartlett was born in Massachusetts but lived most of his life in Kingston, New Hampshire. He was in New Hampshire's Committee of Correspondence, the Continental Congress, and the Constitutional Convention. He was the second to sign the Declaration of Independence, right after John Hancock. From 1790 to 1794 he served as governor.
