The black sapote is a tropical fruit with dark, pudding-like flesh that tastes like mild chocolate. It's often called the 'chocolate pudding fruit'. The soursop is a spiky green fruit with soft white flesh, blending flavours of strawberry, pineapple, and citrus. It's used in juices and desserts. The langsat is a small, round fruit with translucent flesh and a sweet-tart taste, like grapefruit meets lychee. It grows in clusters like grapes.
Used in sweets and cosmetics, the cupuaçu is an Amazonian cousin of cacao with a creamy pulp that tastes like chocolate crossed with pineapple.
The chayote is technically a fruit, but treated like a vegetable. It's green, wrinkled, and mild in flavour and great for stir-fries and stews.
The ackee is Jamaica's national fruit. Its bright red pods open to reveal soft yellow flesh, which is edible only when fully ripe, or it's toxic.
The pawpaw is native to North America, and has custardy flesh and a tropical flavour like banana-mango. It is often overlooked but delicious.
The mangosteen has a thick purple rind that hides delicate white segments with a sweet, floral taste. It is revered as the 'queen of fruits'. The miracle fruit is a tiny red berry that temporarily rewires your taste buds, as it makes sour foods taste sweet thanks to a compound called miraculin. The rambutan is a hairy red fruit with juicy, translucent flesh. It tastes similar to lychee but with a slightly firmer bite.
The salak is known as 'snake fruit' for its scaly skin. It has crisp, tangy-sweet flesh with a hint of apple and banana.
The breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit that's cooked like a potato. When roasted, it tastes like freshly baked bread. The ice cream bean has a long green pod filled with fluffy white pulp that tastes like vanilla ice cream. It grows on leguminous trees in South America. The durian is infamous for its intense smell, loved or loathed. Inside, it has creamy, custard-like flesh with a rich, sweet-savoury flavour. The jabuticaba is a grape-like fruit that grows directly on the trunk of its tree. It's sweet, dark flesh is used in jams and wines.
These are the fakes! I made them up, along with descriptions, for a laugh! :-)
The dramaquat is small, citrusy, and emotionally unstable. It bursts into tears when sliced. The zigzagberry is a berry that refuses to grow in a straight line. The grumblegrape is sour, wrinkled, and perpetually annoyed. It complains about being picked too early or too late. The whistleplum emits a high-pitched whistle when ripe and is often mistaken for a kettle.
The muddlefruit changes flavour every time you bite it. Is it a banana? Is it a pear? No one knows. The glowguava radiates a soft neon light and hums gently at night. The snarkmelon has a rind covered in sarcastic messages. Its flesh is juicy but judgmental. The blunderberry accidentally rolls off tables, stains everything, and ruins recipes. The fizzplum is a carbonated stone fruit that explodes if you wink at it.
