Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yeti

Abominable Snowman, Bigfoot, and Yeti are each described as large ape-like creatures that lurk in their environments. The origin of the Yeti goes back to the sherpa in Nepal identifying the mysterious being that would be allegedly seen in the mountains during winter. The name "yeti" references two words that mean "rocky place" and "bear".
2. Succubus

The male counterpart of a succubus is an incubus. A succubus has been described as female demon who appears in the night dreams of a man and attempts to seduce him. In modern times, a ultra-seductive woman can be called a succubus but does not necessarily refer to anything demonic.
3. Phoenix

Greek, Egyptian, and Persian mythology all reference the phoenix. Legend has it that the phoenix is an immortal being that can be born again over and over. When a phoenix dies it may be in a showy display like a ball of flames or combustion. From the ashes of those flames, the phoenix comes back to life.
4. Ogre

When you first think ogre, you may picture the lovable ogre from "Shrek". But as you can see in the picture, ogres were large monsters that loved to dine on small children. The origin of the word "ogre" goes back to the French. Giants like those in "Jack and the Beanstalk" have similar qualities to what an ogre represents.
5. Kelpie

Scottish folklore gave us the water kelpie, which some have likened to the Devil. A kelpie could shape-shift and when it shifted to human form it retained its hooves. The kelpie would haunt rivers and lochs and lure its victims by often appearing as a horse and ultimately drown those who fell under its spell.
6. Gorgon

Gorgons come from Greek mythology. The most familiar gorgon is Medusa, who had the ability to turn people into stone just by looking at them. Medusa appeared with a head full of snakes. There are three gorgon sisters, Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa.
7. Elf

North Germanic folklore brought us the legend of the elf. The human-like creature is known for its magical powers and ability to either help or hinder humans. In Norse mythology, elves are associated with causing illness with magical abilities or using their beauty for seduction.
8. Bunyip

Aboriginal mythology from Australia gave us the creature known as the bunyip. The beast was said to inhabit creeks, bogs, lakes, and swamps. The fierce creature is amphibious and the name "bunyip" translates to "evil spirit".
9. Pegasus

Greek mythology gave us the mythological creature known as the pegasus, a winged horse with the ability to fly. He was sired by Poseidon. Legend had it that Pegasus allowed Bellerophon to ride his pegasus to defeat the monster Chimera.
10. Lycanthrope

A lycanthrope is also known as a werewolf. The origin is in European folklore and the belief is that the individual has the ability to shape shift into a wolf-man hybrid, usually without being abl to control the change, an affliction called lycanthropy. In modern times, the werewolf's transformation is triggered by a full moon.
