Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With which European actor did Jack play in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever"?

Answer: Yves Montand

Yves Montand was married to Simone Signoret for 34 years and dated Édith Piaf. He also had an affair with Marilyn Monroe. His works include "Z", "Jean de Florette" and "Manon of the Spring" ("Manon des sources"). In this movie he played Dr. Marc Chabot, a hypnotist helping Daisy Gamble (Barbra Streisand) to quit smoking.

He realized that she had some psychic powers that enabled her to regress into past lives and different personalities. Nicholson played Tad Pringle, a lover of the protagonist.
2. Did he play with Vincent Price AND Boris Karloff in one movie?

Answer: Yes

This movie was 1963 H. P. Lovecraft horror "The Raven". Nicholson was taken under the wing of Roger Corman and met these two horror superstars. He made one more movie with Boris Karloff and it was 1963 "The Terror". He didn't work with Vincent Price anymore. Price played Dr. Erasmus Craven, a magician, who helped his friend Dr. Adolphus Bedlo (played by another star, Peter Lorre) to become human again.

He was turned into a raven by another magician, Dr. Scarabus, played by Karloff. Jack played Rexford Bedlo, Adolphus Bedlo's son.
3. With which famous director did he play in "A Safe Place", a little known, obscure Henry Jaglom 1971 movie?

Answer: Orson Welles

This movie was about a woman (Tuesday Weld) who lived in a place where she could never grow up. Orson Welles played the Magician and Jack Nicholson played Mitch, her ideal fantasy lover. Orson Welles is most known for "Citizen Kane", "The Magnificent Ambersons" and "Touch of Evil". He also acted in more than 100 movies.
4. He played with Warren Beatty twice. One title was "Reds". What was the name of the other movie?

5. What bearded director played a cameo in Jack's foul language heavy 1973 movie, "The Last Detail"?

Answer: Hal Ashby

Directed by Ashby, it produced Nicholson's third Oscar nomination. This movie was so profane that it took two years to be made. Columbia objected many times to the profanity and the script ended up having only 87 swear words. Hal Ashby played (he was uncredited) a bearded man at a bar. He is most famous for "Harold and Maude" and "Shampoo".

The movie was about two Navy men who had to escort an offender to prison. Instead of going straight to their destination, they decided to show him one last good time along the way. Jack Nicholson played Billy Buddusky, one of the Navy men.
6. In which movie did he play with his wife, Sandra Knight?

Answer: The Terror

They were married for six years and had one daughter, Jennifer Nicholson. In the movie Jack played Lt. Andre Duvalier, who fell in love with a strange, young woman named Helene, who was very similar to the Baroness Von Leppe. The Baroness was a wife of Baron Victor Frederick Von Leppe (played by Boris Karloff), who died twenty years earlier. Helene was played by Knight.
7. In which movie did Jack play with Jack Nicholson?

Answer: Mars Attacks!

In this 1996 Tim Burton movie he played President James Dale and casino-owner Art Land. The movie itself was a box-office flop, having a budget of $70,000,000 and grossing about $38,000,000 in US. It later grew up to $100,000,000 worldwide, but still is considered a flop.

It told the story of an alien attack on the Earth and was done as a B-movie spoof. It was very episodic and didn't have a main plot.
8. Jack has directed three movies (he wasn't credited for 1963 "The Terror"). In which of his movies did two directors, Robert Towne and Henry Jaglom, play?

Answer: Drive, He Said

"Drive, He Said" (1971) was Jack's debut as a director. It was the only movie that he directed and didn't act in. It was about a basketball player, Hector, playing for the College basketball team, the Leopards. His girlfriend, Olive, didn't know whether to stay with him or leave him.

His friend, Gabriel, wanted desperately not to get drafted for Vietnam. Towne and Jaglom played two college professors.
9. Jack wanted his old friend, Rupert Crosse, to play in this movie, but he was terminally ill and could no longer work. The character was GM1 'Mule' Mulhall. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: The Last Detail

Rupert Crosse played in seven movies (twice uncredited) and some series. He was nominated for Best Supporting Role in 1979 "The Reivers". His only movie with Jack was a 1965 western "Ride in the Whirlwind".

The movie was about two Navy men who had to escort an offender to prison. Instead of going straight to their destination, they decided to show him one last good time along the way.
10. Jack is beaten by only one person in terms of Oscar nominations. It's, of course, Meryl Streep. They played in two movies together. What were their titles?

Answer: "Ironweed" and "Heartburn"

Jack has got twelve nominations and won three Oscars: for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Terms of Endearment" and "As Good as It Gets". Meryl Streep has been nominated fourteen times and won twice: for "Sophie's Choice" and "Kramer vs. Kramer". Jack also shares his twelve nominations with Katharine Hepburn.

"Ironweed" was about a schizophrenic drifter, who spent Halloween in his home town after returning there for the first time in decades. Meryl Streep played his friend Helen who went there with him.

In "Heartburn" Rachel and Mark were both Washington journalists. They met at a wedding and, not long after, they got married themselves. Very soon they had a daughter, Annie, but one day Rachel learned that Mark was having an affair during her pregnancy. Rachel was played by Streep and Mark by Jack.
