Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How is it that Michael Rogin was not killed by the burst of radiation which killed most of the people on Earth in "Five" (1951)?

Answer: His building elevator acted like a Faraday cage.

Michael Rogin, played by William Phipps, was operating an elevator in the Empire State Building in New York City at the time of the atom-bomb extinction event. He can't explain why this prevented his death when everyone else around him was killed by a burst of radiation. A Faraday cage is a conductive construction which blocks external radio-frequency interference. He tells Roseanne that he thereafter wandered around New York City but found everyone else dead.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is not?

Answer: The Revenge of the Mummy

The feature-length movies "The Aztec Mummy" (1957), "The Curse of the Aztec Mummy" (1957), and "The Mummy" (1959) are all actual, not-made-up, existent, and authentic motion pictures. "The Aztec Mummy" and "The Curse of the Aztec Mummy" are the first two of the three movies which conclude with "The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy" (1958). Rafael Portillo directed this Mexican science fiction horror trilogy. "The Mummy" was a Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee offering based on the characters and mythos of "The Mummy's Hand" (1940), "The Mummy's Tomb" (1942), and "The Mummy's Ghost" (1944).

Universal Studios built three dark roller-coaster rides called "Revenge of the Mummy" in Florida, Hollywood, and Singapore. The rides are based upon "The Mummy" (1999), "The Mummy Returns" (2001), and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008). Roy Pound wrote a novel called "The Mummy's Revenge" (1996). Marie Jacks and A.E. Parker wrote a book in the "Clue" series called "Revenge of the Mummy" (1996). Novelist Roger Grubbs wrote "Revenge of the Mummies" (2022). There was an episode of "The Basil Brush Show" called "Revenge of the Mummy" (2004) and an episode of "Pair of Kings" called "Revenge of the Mummy" (2010). There does not seem to have been any feature-length motion picture titled "The Revenge of the Mummy."
3. What language does Kharis, the mummified high priest of Karnak, speak in "The Mummy" (1959)?

Answer: None. Kharis is mute.

When the Princess Ananka died in Ancient Egypt, Kharis, the high priest of Karnak conducted her funerary services. Because he was secretly in love with the princess, he snuck back into her tomb and read aloud from the Scroll of Life in order to resurrect her. Kharis was caught in the act, charged, convicted, and sentenced. His tongue was cut out. He was mummified alive. He was given eternal life and entombed in a secret chamber next to Ananka's sarcophagus. His curse was to guard her resting place for all time and, if anyone should desecrate it, to kill them.
4. Which actor played good-guy astronomer-scientist Dr. Stuart Kelston in "Invaders From Mars" (1953)?

Answer: Arthur Franz

Dr. Stuart Kelston, an astronomer, along with Dr. Patricia Blake, played by Helena Carter, a medical doctor, are the only people who believe wee David's report about the flying saucer and the Martians' mind control methods. Because they believe him and because the local government research facility is federal, they call the US Army. Dr. Kelston works at the Observatory and opines that the Martians have come at this time because the orbits of Earth and Mars are bringing them closest together.
5. Which director, perhaps better known for directing "Godzilla" (1954), "Rodan" (1956), and "The Mysterians" (1957), directed "The H-Man" (1958)?

Answer: Ishirô Honda

Ishirô Honda (1911-1993) directed 46 motion pictures in his illustrious career. Although he directed many genres of film, he is probably best known as the creator of kaiju movies such as "Godzilla," "Rodan," "The Mysterians, and "The H-Man." Honda's eighth and final Godzilla film, "Terror of Mechagodzilla" (1975), led to his retirement as a feature director. The director died in 1993; his wife, Kimi Honda, died in 2018 at 101 years of age.
6. What was the source of the characters and story in "Superman and the Mole Men" (1951)?

Answer: a comic strip by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster

The original backstory and characters for Superman were taken from a newspaper comic strip (1939-1966). In the beginning, it was written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Joe Shuster. Superman first appeared in a DC comic book in 1938. The screenplay for "Superman and the Mole Men" purported in the credits to have been written by Richard Fielding.

This was a pseudonym for Robert Maxwell and Whitney Ellsworth. Robert Maxwell (1908-1971) was a radio and TV producer and scriptwriter who worked on Superman on both radio and television.

He was slated to co-produce "Superman and the Mole Men." His wife, Jessica Fielding Maxwell, was the source of the nom de plume used by Robert Maxwell and Whitney Ellsworth. Ellsworth (1908-1980) was a comic book editor, writer and artist, assigned by DC comics as their liaison with Lippert Pictures.

He then went to work on the TV series.
7. What kind of monster was the creature in "Half Human" (1958)?

Answer: yeti / abominable snowman

Clues to the identity of the mountain creature accumulate in "Half Human". It is covered with long hair which is similar to human hair. It leaves bare hominid bipedal footprints in the snow. It is apelike. Local villagers worship it. It eats meat and mushrooms. It collects the bones of its dead. It lives in a cave. Scientists calculate its height to be nine feet and its weight to be 1800 pounds. Japanese scientist Professor Tanaka opines that the creature must be the Abominable Snowman, or the Missing Link between apes and humans. American medical doctor Carl Jordan examines the cadaver of the creature's young son and concludes that it is roughly half human / half animal, and is only a few generations removed from Neanderthal Man.

The minotaur is a half human / half bull described in Greek mythology. A dhampyr is a half vampire / half human hybrid. Satyrs are mythological creatures which are half human and half horse, half donkey or half goat. The upper body is human and the legs belong to the other thing.
8. For what is Katherine Victor best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

American actress Katherine Victor (1923-2004) worked on radio and on stage until 1953 when she appeared in her first motion picture "Mesa of Lost Women." Her first starring role was for Jerry Warren in "Teenage Zombies" (1959). Her statement that Jerry Warren discovered her is not historically correct. She also had roles in "The Cape Canaveral Monsters" (1960), "Creature of the Walking Dead" (1965), "House of the Black Death" (1965), "The Wild World of Batwoman" (1966), and "Frankenstein Island" (1981).
9. The motion picture "The Electronic Monster" (1958) is set where?

Answer: the south of France

An automobile accident in the south of France leads insurance investigator Jeff Keenan to Cannes. His inquiry points toward a private psychiatric clinic on the French Riviera. The interiors were shot at the Merton Park Studios, Merton, London, England, UK. The movie is set entirely in France but the film was shot entirely in England.
10. In "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" (1955), how many mummies appear on the screen at the same time?

Answer: three

When Abbott and Costello arrive at the tomb, they stumble into a plot to kill them. The actual mummy Klaris is pursuing anybody who desecrates the tomb. Charlie, one of Semu's henchpersons, dresses up as a mummy. Abbott disguises himself as a mummy. At one exciting point near the end of the film, there are three mummies running around subterraneanly, occasionally running into and frightening one another.
