Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Untamed Women" (1952), when the Americans made contact with the women on the island, they were told of the "hairy men" who also lived there. Who were these "hairy men"?

Answer: Neanderthals

Sandra, the high priestess of the women on the island, explains to Steve and his men that she and her sisters are descendants of the Druids, who fled from Ancient Britain. She claims that the Neanderthals killed all of the men and boys in her tribe. She reports that the women are repeatedly attacked by these Neanderthals, who carry off a few with whom to breed.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: The Invincible Monster

"The Cosmic Monsters" (1958) is the US title of "The Strange World of Planet X" made in Great Britain. "The Electronic Monster" (1958) is a British production set in France starring two Americans (Rod Cameron and Mary Murphy). "The Magnetic Monster" (1953) follows Dr. Jeffrey Stewart, an agent of the Office of Scientific Investigation, played by Richard Carlson, as he saves the Earth. "Gammera the Invincible" (1966) is a Japanese kaiju motion picture.

Invincible is a character in Image Comics and in a television series based on it produced in 2021.

There does not appear to have been a 1950s movie titled "The Invincible Monster".
3. What did the aliens in the "Killers from Space" (1954) look like?

Answer: google eyes, black hoodies, striped cummerbunds

The Astronians are humanoids from a solar system far away from Earth. As their sun dimmed, their eyes got bigger and bigger to compensate for the reduced sunlight. They wear black body suits which extend up over their heads like a hoodie sweatshirt on Earth. The meaning of the stripes on their cummerbunds is unclear.
4. Who played Elizabeth, Baron Victor Frankenstein's fiancée, in "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957)?

Answer: Hazel Court

One of the leading "scream queens" of the 1950s and 1960s, Hazel Court played Elizabeth, the wicked baron's fiancée, in "The Curse of Frankenstein". Other outstanding horror roles included parts in "Dr. Blood's Coffin" (1961), "The Premature Burial" (1962), and "The Masque of the Red Death" (1964). Court's own daughter, Sally Walsh, played the character Elizabeth as a young girl in flashbacks.
5. Who directed "Godzilla" (1954)?

Answer: Ishirô Honda

Other directors were considered for "Godzilla" before producers settled on Ishirô Honda. He had military experience in the Dutch West Indies in WWII which could lend authenticity to the scenes involving the Japanese Defense Force. He had personal interests in science and enjoyed "unusual things"... which Godzilla certainly was.

He is most famous for directing 11 Godzilla films, including the original 1954 film, as well as other kaiju films such as "Rodan" (1956) and "The Mysterians" (1957).
6. Was there a remake of or sequel to "House on Haunted Hill" (1959)?

Answer: Yes, both

In the 1999 remake of "House on Haunted Hill", Geoffrey Rush plays Stephen Price, the eccentric millionaire who offers his guests a million dollars apiece to survive a night in his haunted house. The review printed in the New York Times called it "a sorry reincarnation of the original".

There was also a direct-to-video sequel called "Return to House on Haunted Hill" made in 2007. Sales were poor and the reviews atrocious.
7. In "Night of the Ghouls" (1959), who is the fraudster who portrays himself as a genuine psychic?

Answer: Doctor Acula

If his doctoral title is written as an abbreviation, Dr. Acula's name spells "dracula". This makes no sense as he had nothing whatsoever to do with vampires nor vampirism in "Night of the Ghouls". Nothing! Instead, he is a con artist who poses as a psychic in order to swindle people out of their money by claiming to be able to reach their deceased loved ones through seance.
8. For what is Jeff Morrow best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Born Leslie Irving Morrow, Jeff Morrow (1907-1993) was an American stage, television and motion picture actor. He accomplished success as a commercial artist before taking up acting. His roles in science fiction and horror films include "This Island Earth" (1955), "The Creature Walks Among Us" (1956), "Kronos" (1957), and "The Giant Claw" (1957).

He played opposite Rex Reason, who starred with him in "This Island Earth", in a 1962 episode of Perry Mason titled "The Case of the Ancient Romeo". He also had a cameo in writer/director Harry Essex' movie "Octaman" (1971) for fun and old-times sake.
9. Where is the motion picture "Beast from Haunted Cave" (1959) set?

Answer: Black Hills of South Dakota

The target of the robbery conspiracy in "Beast from Haunted Cave" is a bank vault in Deadwood, South Dakota. The ski resort and mountain cabin which figure in the movie are nearby. After the opening credits of the film, the following appears, "We wish to express our grateful appreciation to the people of South Dakota, whose cooperation made this picture possible." The Chamber of Commerce in South Dakota offered the Corman Brothers financial incentives to film movies there.
10. Which of the following motion pictures does *NOT* involve a crazy doctor or other mad scientist?

Answer: The Hideous Sun Demon (1958)

In "The Alligator People", Dr. Mark Sinclair is a Louisiana physician who develops a drug which regenerates missing limbs. In "The Manster", Dr. Robert Suzuki is a Japanese scientist who invents a drug to speed up evolution. In "The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues", Dr. King, a marine biologist, creates an undersea radioactive monster.

There is neither a crazy doctor nor some other mad scientist in "The Hideous Sun Demon".
