Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first movie in this list is also one of only two animated ones. Which Pixar film took us through a wide range of emotions in just the first few minutes, leaving us devastated as a devoted husband deals with the loss of his beloved wife?

Answer: Up

"Up" was released to critical acclaim and won two Academy Awards and was nominated for another three including Best Picture, becoming only the second animated move ever to be nominated in that category after Disney's "Beauty and the Beast".

"Up" follows senior citizen Carl Frederickson and his attempt to fulfill his late wife's wish to visit Paradise Falls by attaching thousands of helium balloons to his house. Adventure and danger await him in South America as he discovers a childhood idol may not be the hero he always thought.
2. Possibly my favorite WWII movie, this particular film culminates as Captain Miller, with his dying breath, tells a young army private to "earn this." In what 1998 tearjerker does this scene take place?

Answer: Saving Private Ryan

"Saving Private Ryan" was notable for its hyper-realistic portrayal of the violence and carnage of the D-Day landings. Captain Miller, played by Tom Hanks, is tasked with finding Private James Ryan whose three brothers have all been killed in action. In the final scene, we see an elderly James Ryan break down in tears at the grave of Captain Miller.

The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning 5.
3. This 1990 film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams caused us to tear up when a group of catatonic patients miraculously regained their faculties due to an experimental new drug. Later, they learn that the fantastic result is only a temporary one. Which Academy Award nominee is described here?

Answer: Awakenings

Fresh on the heels of the critically acclaimed "Dead Poets Society" (which certainly could have been included in this quiz), Robin Williams continued his foray into dramatic cinema. Robert De Niro earned his fifth Academy Award acting nomination for his portrayal of Leonard Lowe.
4. You could probably fill an entire quiz with just moments from the "Harry Potter" series of movies but one in particular gets me every time. Which of the eight movies ends as Harry digs a grave, by hand, for a fallen friend?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I

Dobby, who began his relationship with Harry Potter in "The Chamber of Secrets", dies as he rescues Harry and Hermione from Bellatrix Lestrange at Malfoy Manor. Harry insists on burying Dobby the old fashioned way, without magic. Dumbledore have mercy, that was an emotional scene.

Having been given his task from Dumbledore to find the remaining horcruxes, Harry, Ron, and Hermione set out an adventure to retrieve them. Danger lurks everywhere as Voldemort and his followers have infiltrated Hogwarts and the Ministry of Magic.
5. This next emotional moment comes not as a result of a character's death, but instead as a result of a character's deeds, or rather a quartet of characters. In what entry in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy does an entire city bow down before four astonished hobbits?

Answer: The Return of the King

Sauron is destroyed, Middle Earth is saved, and Aragorn has just been crowned king. As he passes his friends and loyal subjects, Arwen at his side, he stops in front of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippen. They awkwardly bow to Aragorn who immediately says, "My friends, you bow to no one." Aragorn and the entire city bow to the four hobbits in recognition of their heroic acts. If that didn't get the tear ducts goin', I don't know what will.

"Return of the King" became only the third movie to win 11 academy awards and the only of the three to sweep every category in which it was nominated. The film follows Frodo and Sam's final journey to Mount Doom as the remaining members of the fellowship clash with the Dark Lord's armies at Minas Tirith, capital of Gondor.
6. Never before (and possibly never since) had the death of a canine been so emotionally impactful. This 1957 film caused many a moist cheek as it saw a young man shoot his own rabid dog. What was the poor dog's name?

Answer: Old Yeller

Though the movie had a modest initial box office run, "Old Yeller" later became a staple of VHS collections everywhere. Travis and Old Yeller were best friends. When a rabid wolf attacks Travis and his sister, Old Yeller fights the wolf long enough for Travis to shoot it. Old Yeller is bitten in the skirmish and Travis must make an impossible decision.
7. Who's your friend who likes to play? Why, it's Bing Bong of course. Which other Pixar great saw audiences get choked up as a young girl's imaginary friend gets left behind in the memory dump and slowly fades away?

Answer: Inside Out

After showing us that everything from Bugs to Cars could have feelings, Pixar's "Inside Out" pushed the boundary even further to show us that even feelings have feelings. The film's complex and often difficult themes resonated with people as it grossed close to one billion dollars worldwide
8. I'll fully admit that I'm a child of the '80s so this next movie moment stayed with me for a long time. Imagine a frustrated, dirty, and exhausted hero trying to desperately pull his horse out of the Swamp of Sadness before the horse drowns. The hero fails. Which movie is this?

Answer: The NeverEnding Story

Popularity in "The NeverEnding Story" saw a resurgence upon the release of the third season of the Netflix Sci-Fi show "Stranger Things". During a pivotal moment in the final episode, Suzie makes Dustin sing the theme song to "The NeverEnding Story" before she will tell him a piece of critical information.

Bastian, a victim of incessant bullying, takes refuge in a bookstore where he encounters a tome called "The NeverEnding Story". Bastian takes the book and spends the day immersed in a world where the line between fantasy and reality becomes blurred as he finds himself becoming part of the very story he is reading.
9. This title character deals with his fair share of deaths. His own mother dies from cancer and then his long-time friend and occasional girlfriend passes leaving him a single father. For my money, though, it's another death that makes me tear up the most. In what movie does Bubba tell the title character, "I wanna go home" just before passing?

Answer: Forrest Gump

Earning Tom Hanks his second Best Actor Academy Award in as many years, Forrest Gump was a critical and box office success. The film followed Forrest through many major US historical events including the Vietnam war, the Civil Rights movement, and the Watergate scandal.
10. Certainly not all tears are from sadness. This last movie made us cry of laughter. Which feature included such gems as the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, a wizard named Tim, and a very animated representation of the Lord God Almighty?

Answer: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Made on a modest budget of only £282,035 (about $350,000), "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" has to have one of the lowest dollars (or pounds) to laugh ratio in the history of cinema. The budget was so bad that they had to forego real horses and thus the iconic galloping motions and clip-clopping of coconuts were born.

King Arthur seeks knights to join his round table and aid him on his quest to find the Holy Grail. They encounter numerous challenges in their adventures including some ill-mannered Frenchmen, a castle of carnal temptation, and a ferocious hare, among others.
