Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ABBA, "The Winner Takes It All"

"The Winner Takes It All" was released on July 21, 1980. The song became an international success, peaking at number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts on the UK singles chart. "The Winner Takes It All" also made the top ten in several countries.

The songwriters and producers were Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, both members of the band. The lead vocal was sung by Agnetha Faltskog, who was at the time the wife of Bjorn Ulvaeus. The track was the lead single from the band's seventh studio album, "Super Trouper", released later that year.

Speculation about the lyrics to the song was that it was about Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Faltskog's marriage breakup; however, Bjorn denied this, saying it was about the general experience of a divorce, the fact that nobody wins and no one is a loser, and what people go through.
2. John Lennon, "Woman"

A beautiful love song by John Lennon, "Woman," was released on January 12, 1981. The song was written by John Lennon and was also produced by John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Jack Douglas. The flip side of the record was "Beautiful Boys," written by Yoko Ono. The single peaked at number two on the UK singles chart and also reached the number two spot on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The track was the second song from the album "Double Fantasy" to be allocated as a single and, sadly, the first song to be released after the murder of John Lennon on December 8, 1980. When John Lennon was talking to Rolling Stone Magazine three days before his murder, he told the reporter that the lyrics of the song were about how we all take women for granted in general and the things women do for us.
3. Survivor, "Eye of the Tiger"

"Eye of the Tiger" was released on May 31, 1982. The song was written as the theme song for the film "Rocky III," starring Sylvester Stallone. The song was written by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik of Survivor. The song was also composed and produced by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik. Sylvester Stallone's request to the band was to do a song for the film that would have some kind of connection to the film.

Chart-wise, "Eye of the Tiger" was a worldwide hit, reaching the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and also making the top spot on the UK singles chart. The song also reached the number one spot in several other countries.
4. Duran Duran, "Is There Something I Should Know?"

"Is There Something I Should Know?" was recorded in December 1982 and released on March 14, 1983. The song was written as a collaborative effort between all the members of the Duran Duran line-up. "Is There Something I Should Know?" was the very first single to reach the number one position for the band on the UK singles chart; it also peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The song was intended as a single and was not associated with any album; however, in 1983, the song was added to the band's 1981 album "Duran Duran" as a US reissue.
5. Deniece Williams, "Let's Hear It for the Boy"

"Let's Hear It for the Boy" was released on February 14, 1984. The songwriters were Tom Snow and Dean Pitchford. The song also appeared on the soundtrack for the film "Footloose," which was also released in 1984. "Let's Hear It for the Boy" was Deniece Williams second-number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and stalled at number two on the UK singles chart. The single also charted in several other countries.

Tears for Fears is a British pop group that formed in Bath in 1981. Their music is centred around a mix of new wave and synth-pop. Members of the band were Curt Smith, Roland Orzabal, Manny Elias, and Ian Stanley.
7. The Bangles, "Walk Like an Egyptian"

"Walk Like an Egyptian" was released by the American band The Bangles in September 1986. It was the band's first number-one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100. In the UK, the song peaked at number three on the UK singles chart.

The song was written by Liam Sternberg, an American songwriter and producer. The Bangles were not the first choice for the song, as it was originally offered to Toni Basil, who turned it down. Toni Basil is an American singer who had a huge hit in 1981 with "Mickey." Lene Lovich was then offered the song and actually recorded it; however, it was never released. David Kahne, who was the producer of The Bangles' second album, "Different Light," was sent a copy of the song recorded by Lene Lovich and took it to the band. The members of the band liked the song and agreed to record it; it was included on the second album. "Different Light" was also released in 1986.
8. Whitesnake, "Is This Love"

Recorded by the British rock band Whitesnake "Is This Love" was released on May 26, 1987. The songwriters were lead singer David Coverdale and guitarist John Sykes. "Is This Love" reached the ninth position on the UK singles chart and peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100.

"Is This Love" was the band's second biggest hit in the USA; it followed their number one hit, "Here I Go Again." According to David Coverdale, the song was originally written and intended for Tina Turner; however, when David Geffen heard the song, he told Coverdale it would be best to keep the song for the band. David Geffen is an American entrepreneur involved in filmmaking, record executive, and producer. He was also the founder of Asylum Records and Geffen Records. Whitesnake was on the Geffen-EMI label.
9. Bobby McFerrin, "Don't Worry, Be Happy"

This catchy little tune, "Don't Worry, Be Happy," was written by Bobby McFerrin. The song was released on July 24, 1988, on the EMI-Manhattan label. The song was an international hit, reaching the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topping out at number two on the UK singles chart. The song was also a top-ten hit in many other countries, including Canada, Australia, and Denmark.

"Don't Worry, Be Happy" was different from the main stream songs in the sense that it had no instrumental accompaniment; it was vocal only. It was also the first a cappella song to reach the number one position on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song was also the lead single from McFerrin's fourth album, "Simple Pleasures," released in 1988.
10. Phil Collins, "Another Day in Paradise"

"Another Day in Paradise" was released on October 23, 1989. The song was written by Phil Collins and also produced by Phil Collins and Hugh Padgham. Personnel for the track were Phil Collins (vocals, keyboards, drums, Roland TR-808 drum machine), Dominic Miller (electric guitar, classical guitar), Leland Sklar (bass), and David Crosby (backing vocals).

"Another Day in Paradise" charted in the top position on the US Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number two on the UK singles chart. The song was also the first track on the fourth album, "But Seriously," which was also released in 1989. As most of you probably know, Phil Collins was the drummer for Genesis and later became the lead singer when Peter Gabriel left in 1975. Collins left Genesis in 1996 to focus on his solo career, and he had seven number-one hit singles in the US alone. "Another Day in Paradise" was the last time Phil Collins would have a number-one hit in the US.
