Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1962 The Beatles sang back-up for what singer?

Answer: Tony Sheridan

The song that was released as a 45 single was 'My Bonnie'. The flip side was 'When The Saints Go Marching In' and was released on MGM Records.

Sheridan recorded the song with The Beatles in Hamburg, Germany, in 1961, during a period when the band were not yet at the height of their fame, refining their skills through extensive performances in German nightclubs. At that time, Pete Best was still the drummer - Ringo Starr joined later - and the majority of their songs consisted of covers, with "My Bonnie" being included in their live performances.
2. Before they were Simon and Garfunkel, what did this famous duo call themselves?

Answer: Tom and Jerry

Simon and Garfunkel named themselves after cartoon characters between 1956 and 1958. The duo changed their names to Simon and Garfunkel in 1963 and were signed to the American label Columbia. In 1964 the duo released their first album, "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M."

The breakthrough for Simon and Garfunkel was the hit single "The Sound of Silence", although originally it was known as "The Sounds of Silence", in 1965. A remix version of the song went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the first week of 1966.
3. What famous producer created 'The Wall Of Sound'?

Answer: Phil Spector

In the 1960s, working at Gold Star Studios, Phil Spector developed the 'Wall of Sound' recording method. His goal was to use studio technology to craft a thicker, more orchestral audio experience. Spector arranged multiple groups of instruments, frequently doubling or tripling their parts.

This approach transformed music in a remarkable way which resulted in a fuller, richer sound where, with proper mixing, the separate instruments blended together and became indistinguishable to listeners.
4. "Bus Stop" was the first top-ten hit in America for this English band. Who was this band that was formed in Manchester?

Answer: The Hollies

"Bus Stop" was released on 17 June 1966. The song was written by Graham Gouldman and recorded at the EMI studio in London. On the charts "Bus Stop" peaked at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.

This song tells the story of a couple who encounter each other on a rainy day at a bus stop. Their love begins to grow as they share an umbrella. Graham Gouldman mentioned that he wrote the song while travelling on the No. 95 bus.

The Hollies got together in 1962 in Manchester. The original members of the band were Eric Haydock, Allan Clarke, Graham Nash, Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott. Allan Clarke was the lead singer. In the early 1960s the band had several top ten hits including "Just One Look", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window" and "Carrie Anne". If you like the "Merseybeat" sound then play a few tunes from the band.
5. Fleetwood Mac released a single record in 1968 that was an instrumental. Can you recall the name of the single?

Answer: Albatross

"Albatross" was released on 22 November 1968 and was recorded at the CBS studio in London. The composition was written by Peter Green and became Fleetwood Mac's sole number one single on the UK charts. In 1973, the track was re-released as a single and achieved number two in the UK.

Way back in the 1960s the line-up of Fleetwood Mac was completely different personnel. The members of the band at that time were Peter Green (guitar), Danny Kirwan (guitar), John McVie (bass guitar) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). It's hard to believe that this instrumental was written using only four chords, E, Emaj7 (or G#m/E), A/E, and F#m.
6. Who was the group that sang "She's Not There" in 1964?

Answer: The Zombies

Chart-wise, the song topped the charts on the US Cash Box Top 100 and was number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, while in the UK the song peaked at number 12 on the UK Singles Chart.

The band was formed in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, in 1962. Following their success with "She's Not There", the band released their debut album, "Begin Here", in 1965. The same album was released three months earlier in the US went under a different name called "The Zombies".
7. What year did Ben E. King have a number one hit on the Hot R&B Sides (Billboard) with the song "Stand by Me"?

Answer: 1961

"Stand by Me" was recorded on October 27, 1960, and released in 1961. The song was written in a joint effort between Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. This song was on the soundtrack for the 1986 film "Stand by Me", which had a collection of songs from the 1950s.

8. Who was the solo artist that sang the ballad "Cupid" in 1961?

Answer: Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke was the artist that sang "Cupid". The song was released on May 16, 1961, and reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart, while in the US it only reached 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Sam Cooke wrote the song, and Hugo & Luigi were the producers. Sam Cooke wasn't originally going to sing the song. The producers had asked Sam to write a song for a girl they saw on a Perry Como TV show. When the girl began to sing, the producers had second thoughts, and they chose to keep "Cupid" for Cooke instead.

The recording featured Cooke's usual session musicians: Clifton White and Rene Hall on guitar, Clifford Hills on bass, Earl Palmer on drums, and Joseph Gibbons playing guitar and banjo.
9. "Be My Baby" was released in 1963 by whom?

Answer: The Ronettes

The all-girl American group The Ronettes released their debut song "Be My Baby" in August 1963. The song was written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector. Phil Spector was also the producer. "Be My Baby" was the initial Ronettes track produced by Spector and issued through his label, Philles Records. Chart-wise, the record reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the UK (Record Retailer).
10. What was the first album The Beatles released under their new label "Apple"?

Answer: The White Album

Released on November 22, 1968, and recorded at EMI (Abbey Road Studios) and Trident studios in London, the album reached number one on the charts in multiple countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Beatles founded Apple in 1968, which was a division of Apple Corps Ltd. Apple Records, originally conceived as a platform for creative expression for the Beatles, both collectively and as solo artists, also featured various other musicians such as Mary Hopkin, James Taylor, Badfinger, and Billy Preston.
