The Smashing Pumpkins were formed in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. in 1988. "Gish" was the bands debut studio album released on May 28, 1991. Personnel on the album were Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin. Additional musicians were Mary Gaines, who played the cello on "Daydream", and Chris Wagner who played the violin and viola on "Daydream".
The band has changed its genre over the years, which has includes gothic rock, heavy metal, grunge, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegaze, dream pop, and electronic music.
2. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili Peppers was formed in Los Angeles in 1982. The band's classic line up consists of Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante, and Chad Smith. The Red Hot Chili Peppers' debut studio album was self-titled "The Red Hot Chili Peppers", and was released on August 10, 1984. The album never charted on the Billboard 200; it just missed out.
In 2022, the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Commercially, they have sold over 120 million albums all over the world and have won six Grammy Awards.
3. The Cranberries
The Cranberries were an Irish rock band formed in Limerick in 1989. The band consisted of lead vocalist Dolores O'Riordan, Noel Hogan, Mike Hogan (Noel's sibling), and Fergal Lawler. In 1990, O'Riordan took over from original member Niall Quinn.
The band's debut studio album was called "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?", which was released on 1 March 1993, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart and stalling at number 18 on the US Billboard 200. Between 1989 and 2019 the band recorded eight studio albums and released 23 singles.
In September 2003, the band announced they were going on hiatus to allow members to focus on solo careers and spend time with their families. The Cranberries reunited in 2009 and released three albums, with the final one titled "In the End" (2019). Dolores O'Riordan passed away on January 15, 2018. The last album was recorded between 2017 and 2019, and after its release, the band broke up.

Blue Öyster Cult is an American rock group that was established in 1967 in Stony Brook, a small community on Long Island, New York. Blue Öyster Cult's first studio album, titled "Blue Öyster Cult", was released in 1972 through Columbia Records.
Between 1972 and 2024 the band have recorded 16 studio albums and have released 32 singles. The single "(Don't Fear) The Reaper", taken from the band's fourth studio album, "Agents of Fortune", is probably their best-known record.
They has seen several line up changes over the years; however, the most commercially successful line-up featured Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser on lead guitar and vocals, Eric Bloom handling lead vocals, "stun guitar", keyboards, and synthesiser, Allen Lanier playing keyboards and rhythm guitar, Joe Bouchard on bass, vocals, and keyboards, and Albert Bouchard covering drums, percussion, vocals, and various other instruments.

Black Eyed Peas are an American group formed in Los Angeles in 1992. The classic line-up of the band is Fergie, Apl.de.ap, Will.i.am and Taboo. The album "Elephunk" (2003) was the band's first album to be credited as The Black Eyed Peas. It reached number one on the UK R&B Albums Chart and number 14 on the US Billboard 200. The track from the album, "Where Is the Love?" featuring Justin Timberlake, reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the US Pop Airplay Billboard.
The Black Eyed Peas combine various genres such as hip-hop, pop, and dance music. Throughout the years, they have gained millions of fans globally thanks to their catchy songs and lively performances. 6. Blind Melon
Blind Melon is an American rock band formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California. The original members of the band were Shannon Hoon, Rogers Stevens, Christopher Thorn, Brad Smith, and Glen Graham. "Blind Melon" is the debut studio album, which was released on September 22, 1992, reaching number three on the US Billboard 200.
Shannon Hoon, the lead singer, died on October 21, 1995, aged 28 years old; his death was caused by a cocaine overdose. The band continued without a lead singer for four years and eventually disbanded in 1999. Blind Melon reformed for a short period before disbanding again. In 2010 they had a second reformation with Rogers Stevens, Christopher Thorn, Glen Graham and Travis Warren.
One of the band's well-known songs is "No Rain", which was on their debut album. "No Rain" reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart and held the top position on the US Album Rock Tracks chart (Billboard).
7. Spice Girls
The Spice Girls were a British girl group formed in 1994. Original members of the band were Emma Bunton, Mel B, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham. The all-girl group were also known as Posh Spice, Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice and Ginger Spice. Not my cup of tea, but if you were a young girl, you could be part of the "Girl Power" trend.
Although I wasn't a fan, I do admire the work they did. These girls were probably the best girl group commercially that ever was, selling over 100 million albums. "Wannabe" was the debut single by the group, which was released on 26 June 1996. The record reached the top spot in 27 countries. As of 2026, it remains the best-selling single of all time by an all-female group globally.
The girls released three studio albums, "Spice" (1996), "Spiceworld" (1997), and "Forever" (2000). The Spice Girls also released eleven singles, which included "2 Become 1", "Viva Forever" and "Say You'll Be There".
8. Wings
Wings was a British rock band formed in 1971 in London by Paul McCartney. The original members of the band were Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, and Denny Seiwell. "Wild Life" was Wings' debut studio album, which was released on 7 December 1971. The album reached number 11 on the UK Albums Chart and number ten on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes Chart.
On 30 November 1973, Wings released their third album, "Band on the Run"; in the US, the album was released on 5 December 1973. It topped the charts in several countries, including the UK on the Albums Chart and the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape Chart. Two songs from the album "Band on the Run" and "Jet", were released as singles and were both top ten hits.
Over an eleven-year period, Wings released seven studio albums and 29 singles. Denny Laine departed in 1981, which essentially marked the band's end. Throughout the years, there were several changes in the band's line-up. Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, and Denny Laine remained the core members from the beginning to the end.
9. Martha and the Muffins
Martha and the Muffins is a Canadian rock group that was established in 1977. The original lineup included David Millar, Mark Gane, Martha Johnson, Carl Finkle, and Tim Gane. In early 1978, Andy Haas started performing with the band, initially as a guest artist, but he soon became a permanent member. David Millar left to focus on working as their live sound engineer and was replaced by Martha Ladly.
In February 1980 Martha and the Muffins released their debut album "Metro Music". The album only reached number 34 on the UK Albums Chart and had a poor showing on the U.S. Billboard 200, reaching 186 in the chart. One track, "Echo Beach", which was released as a single, reached number ten on the UK Singles chart and number 37 on the US Hot Disco Singles (Billboard). Despite the song having some success, "Echo Beach" was the only significant international hit, although the band had a little more success in Canada.
Martha and the Muffins' discography includes eight studio albums, 18 singles, and two compilation albums. While the band never achieved major international success, they enjoyed greater popularity in their home country.
10. Bread
Bread was an American band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1968. The band was fronted by David Gates, who was a co-founder and co-lead singer. Other members included Jimmy Griffin, Robb Royer, Mike Botts, and Larry Knechtel.
Bread's debut album, which was simply called 'Bread', was released in September 1969. It was one of the first albums to be classified as a "soft rock" album. While it was not a major commercial success, it paved the way for the band's second album, "On the Waters", released in July 1970. On the UK Albums Chart, "On the Waters" reached number 24, while on the US Billboard Top LPs chart, it peaked at number 12. The single taken from the album, "Make It with You" topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and reached number five on the UK Singles Chart.
Bread produced seven studio albums, with their final release being "Lost Without Your Love" in 1977. The band was active during the periods 1968 to 1973, 1976 to 1978, and 1996 to 1997.
