Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. APPLES: which song by The Wedding Present features the lines 'lost your love of life/too much apple pie'? (Hint: apple pie is often associated with the USA.)

Answer: Kennedy

Apple pie, USA, John F. Kennedy, get it? The Wedding Present are an indie band from Leeds with an ever-changing line-up, but singer David Gedge is the constant. John Peel was an early supporter and recorded a session of them playing Ukrainian folk songs (guitarist Peter Solowka was of Ukrainian descent).

They released their debut album 'George Best' in 1987. 'Kennedy' is a track from 'Bizarro', their second album released in 1989, and the only single to be released from it.
2. PEACHES: which of these pairs of bands both recorded a song called 'Peaches'?

Answer: The Stranglers and The Presidents of the United States of America

They might have the same name, but the two 'Peaches' couldn't be any more different! The Presidents of the United States of America released 'Peaches' in 1996, and it was inspired partly by singer Chris Ballew sitting under a peach tree and squeezing fallen peaches, and partly by a homeless man repeatedly saying 'I'm moving to the country, I'm gonna eat a lot of peaches'.

The Stranglers' 'Peaches', meanwhile, was released in 1977 and was censored by the BBC because...well, put it this way, it wasn't about fruit. Certain lines had to be changed in order to make it playable.
3. PINEAPPLES: which Antipodean band, fronted by Neil Finn, recorded the song 'Pineapple Head'?

Answer: Crowded House

'Pineapple Head' appears on Crowded House's fourth album 'Together Alone' and was released in 1994. Mental As Anything's Reg Mombassa did the cover art. The surreal lyrics were inspired by a fever episode that Neil Finn's son Liam was having. Lines that the younger Finn came out with, as well as the song's title, were 'getaway car' and 'detective is flat'.

It was covered by Natalie Imbruglia for 'She Will Have Her Way', a tribute album of Crowded House and Split Enz songs covered by female singers.
4. BANANAS: Madonna recorded 'I'm Going Bananas' for 'I'm Breathless'. Which film, in which Madonna appeared, inspired the album?

Answer: Dick Tracy

Madonna's done her fair share of soundtracks in her time, and 'I'm Breathless' was her soundtrack album for 'Dick Tracy'; three of the songs, written by Stephen Sondheim, appeared in the actual film, while the others were inspired by it. The album was named for Madonna's character, Breathless Mahoney. 'I'm Going Bananas' was written by Michael Kernan and Andy Paley, who wrote multiple songs for the film's soundtrack.

By the way, this is also the album that contains 'Vogue' (and the hilarious ode to spanking, 'Hanky Panky').
5. EXOTIC FRUIT: what kind of jelly did Bob Marley sing about?

Answer: Guava

Pictured are a load of guavas. 'Guava Jelly' was originally recorded by Bob Marley and the Wailers and released as a single in 1971. It is debatable whether the song is actually about fruit or whether fruit is being used as some kind of double-entendre, but the group liked it enough to include it on multiple compilations. Johnny Nash of 'I Can See Clearly Now' fame released his own version a year later, while Barbra Streisand of all people covered it for her 1974 album 'ButterFly'.

Not being a natural reggae singer, Streisand's version was divisive among critics.
6. STRAWBERRIES: which of these is a song by Jack Off Jill?

Answer: Strawberry Gashes

'Strawberry Gashes' is a song on Jack Off Jill's 2000 second album, 'Clear Hearts Grey Flowers', and is about self-harm, as is 'When I Am Queen' ('when I am queen, they will all see the patron saint of self-injury'). Jack Off Jill underwent several line-up changes, with singer Jessicka and bassist/keyboardist Robin Moulder as the constant members.

The band split shortly after the album was released, and a lack of promotion and a deteriorating relationship between Moulder and Jessicka did not help.

However, the band briefly reunited in 2015 and a limited edition vinyl single of 'Strawberry Gashes' was released in 2025, along with the full album, to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
7. RASPBERRIES: which 1998 album by Tori Amos features the song 'Raspberry Swirl'?

Answer: From the Choirgirl Hotel

'Raspberry Swirl', one of Tori Amos' more upbeat and dance-influenced numbers, is a single from 'From the Choirgirl Hotel', Amos' fourth album. In the USA, it was released as a double A-side with 'Cruel'. Various suggestions have been made as to what the song is about, some of which cannot be printed here; Amos herself has suggested that it is about female friendship.

It was the first Amos single to be nominated for a Grammy (Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1999).
8. ORANGES: which Welsh singer recorded the song 'Oranges to Florida' on the album 'Don't Look Down'?

Answer: Cerys Matthews

'Don't Look Down' is former Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews' third solo album, released in 2009. While her solo debut 'Cockahoop' was country-influenced - she was living in the Deep South at the time - 'Don't Look Down' has more of a retro feel. A Welsh language version called 'Paid Edrych I Lawr' was also released, with 'Oranges to Florida' becoming 'Orenau I Florida'.

Some of the songs featured on the album, such as 'Aeroplanes'/'Awyrennau' and 'The Spider & the Fly'/'Y Corryn ar Pry', also featured on Matthews' Welsh language mini-album, 'Awyren = Aeroplane'.
9. CHERRIES: which song by Hole, which appears on 'Celebrity Skin', begins with the line 'swing low, sweet cherry'?

Answer: Awful

'Awful' is the third single from 'Celebrity Skin' and was released in 1999. The full line is 'swing low, sweet cherry, make it awful'. Fittingly, it has a maraschino cherry on the cover. Sweetcherrie, a now defunct Hole forum, was named after the line. According to Courtney Love, it is one of her favourite songs that she's written; the words came before the music, and the lyrics were so verbose they had to be edited down. Drummer Patty Schemel left Hole during the recording of the song and does not play on it, although she is credited as a co-writer.
10. GRAPES: which post-punk band covered 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' on their album 'Cut'?

Answer: The Slits

'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, and originally recorded by the Miracles, though Gladys Knight and the Pips' version was released first. The most famous version of the song is undoubtedly the Marvin Gaye one, which appeared on his eighth album 'In the Groove' (re-released as 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine'), but the Slits' version is notable for being a post-punk cover.

It was recorded as a B-side for the single 'Typical Girls'. As the Slits couldn't afford a horn section, they sang the horn parts themselves, and also added their own bridge.
