The band known as Kansas were formed in 1970 in the state capital of Kansas, Topeka. The band was created by merging members of two local bands, Saratoga and White Clover.

Steve Walsh, from St Joseph, Missouri, was lead singer with Kansas from 1973 until 1981 and again between 1985 and 2014. As well as singing, Walsh also contributed on keyboards.

This mural, painted by John Steuart Curry, is called "Tragic Prelude", and features John Brown, an abolitionist who fought in "Bleeding Kansas" in the 1850s.

After the retirement of Steve Walsh in 2014, Kansas replaced him with Ronnie Platt. Formerly a member of Kansas City band Shooting Star, Platt messaged guitarist Rich Williams on Facebook asking to be considered as the new lead singer of Kansas, and he eventually took over at the microphone in 2016.
