When "Candy Girl" was released, there were five members in the band. Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie Devoe. Johnny Gill replaced Bobby Brown in New Edition in 1988. Then a decade later, Johnny and Bobby joined the other four members to give the band six members.

The Jackson Five set the stage for R&B boy bands when they debuted in 1969. The legendary group was from Gary, Indiana. A decade later, local manager and choreographer Brooke Payne saw the new five-member boy band founded in Boston, Massachusetts and thought they could be the "new edition" of the Motown group and christened them New Edition.
