Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Michael Jackson

"Man In The Mirror" by Michael Jackson was one of three songs from his album "Bad" that appeared on the 1988 year-end countdown. The three songs could not have been more different. "Man In The Mirror" is an inspirational song with a deep message. "The Way You Make Me Feel" is an R&B dance track. "Dirty Diana" is a raw rock song with a guitar solo by Steve Stevens.
2. Natalie Cole

"Pink Cadillac" was an unreleased Bruce Springsteen song that was recorded by R&B star, Natalie Cole. The track ended up at number 75 on the 1988 year end countdown. Other "auto" songs that cracked the top 100 that year included "Mercedes Boy" by Pebbles, "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman, and "Get Outta Of My Dreams, Into My Car" by Billy Ocean.
3. Elton John

"Candle In The Wind" was first released by Elton John in 1973 and dedicated to the memory of Marilyn Monroe. Fifteen years later, Elton released the song again as a live performance from his tour in Australia. It became the 71st biggest charting song of 1988. Then in 1997, the song was released again as a tribute to Princess Diana and saw its biggest success.
4. UB40

Neil Diamond originally wrote and recorded "Red Red Wine" in 1967. In 1983, the song got a bouncy reggae remake by UB40 but wasn't a hit in the United States. But good things come to those who wait and in 1988 "Red Red Wine" by UB40 was a smash hit in the States. The song received major publicity after being featured at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday concert.
5. George Michael

"Monkey" by George Michael was one of four songs that dominated the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart in 1988. The biggest hit of the year was "Faith". "Father Figure" landed at 27, "One More Try" at number eleven, and "Monkey", which finished as the 45th biggest song of the year. All four songs appeared on the UK pop star's album "Faith".
6. Def Leppard

"Pour Some Sugar On Me" was seen in heavy rotation on MTV and was the biggest pop hit for the UK band. The track was released on "Hysteria", the follow-up to 1983's "Pyromania" LP. In addition to "Sugar", "Hysteria" included the title track ballad, "Rocket", "Animal", and "Armageddon It".
7. INXS

"Devil Inside" by INXS was the 46th biggest hit of 1988. If 1988 wasn't George Michael's year, it belongs to INXS. The Australian rock group led by lead singer Michael Hutchence had four songs reach the 1988 year-end countdown. "Need You Tonight" was number two, "New Sensation" at number 65 and "Never Tear Us Apart" landed at 95.
8. Terence Trent D'Arby

"Wishing Well" and "Sign Your Name" were both monster hits for Terence Trent D'Arby. Both tracks were released on his debut album, "Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby". The R&B singer never saw success like he did after his debut album. In 2001, Terence said he had a spiritual rebirth and changed his name to Sananda Maitreya.
9. Exposé

"Seasons Change" ended the year at number sixteen for 1988. The girl group trio, Exposé, brought the flavor of Miami dance pop music to the charts in 1988. The group is best known for their high energy hits like "Let Me Be The One", "Point Of No Return", and "Come Go With Me". But it was their ballad "Seasons Change" that became the group's biggest hit.
10. John Cougar Mellencamp

"Cherry Bomb" by John Cougar Mellancamp ended the year at number 92 on the year-end Billboard Chart. The Midwest singer began his career as Johnny Cougar in 1976. Future releases dropped the Johnny and turned him into John. By 1988, he added his real last name and was known as John Cougar Mellencamp.

In 1991, he dropped the Cougar part of the name. "Cherry Bomb" was released on John's "The Lonesome Jubilee" album.
