The early Fleetwood Mac albums featured Peter Green and an authentic blues style that made them popular with traditionalists. In the early 1970s, Fleetwood Mac transitioned to more of a softer rock sound with Bob Welch replacing Green and Jeremy Spencer. But the arrival of the duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks in 1974 took the band to its greatest commercial heights with a radio friendly rock and roll mixed with pop style. The eleventh Fleetwood Mac album and the second with Lindsey and Stevie, "Rumours", has sold over forty million copies worldwide and sported four top ten Billboard Hot 100 singles.
The opening track, "Second Hand News", featured Lindsey on lead vocals. The song featured acoustic guitars, cymbals, Lindsey scatting on the chorus, and an energetic introduction to the album. "Dreams" was the second track and the album's second single to be released. The song featured Stevie Nicks on lead vocals. "Dreams" has the feel of a relaxing drive on a California highway overlooking the Pacific. It was the only song by Fleetwood Mac to top the Billboard Hot 100. Track three was "Never Going Back Again" by Lindsey. Once again, it featured Buckingham on acoustic guitar and the band singing backup vocals. The song was inspired by the previous romantic relationship between Buckingham and Nicks.
The fourth and fifth songs on "Rumours" were the big singles, "Don't Stop" and "Go Your Own Way". Each song was released as a single. "Go Your Own Way" was the lead single and featured Buckingham on lead vocals and a killer guitar solo. The biting lyrics were directed at his breakup with Nicks. The song was the first Fleetwood Mac song to ever reach the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. "Don't Stop" had lead vocals by Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham. The pop-rock song was written by McVie while being separated from her husband, bandmate John McVie. The optimistic song promised "Open your eyes and look at the day, you'll see things in a different way. Don't stop thinking about tomorrow." Side one of the album ended with McVie's ballad, "Songbird". The song was the B-side to "Dreams" and the piano ballad was a beautiful love song that felt like a children's lullaby.
Side two of "Rumours" opened with the furious rocker, "The Chain". The only song on "Rumours" to really feature all three lead vocalists was "The Chain". While it was not released a single in the 1970s, "The Chain" has become one of the most streamed tracks of all the hits in Fleetwood Mac's catalog. The album's fourth single, "You Make Loving Fun", was written and sung by Christine McVie. Rumors persisted that the song's lyrics were about an affair between McVie and the band's lighting director. It reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Track nine was "I Don't Want To Know" sung by Buckingham and Nicks. The song was originally conceived when they were recording together as Buckingham Nicks. "I Don't Want To Know" was a late replacement for the song "Silver Springs".
The last two songs on "Rumours" were "Oh Daddy" and "Gold Dust Woman". You couldn't get two more diverse songs. "Oh Daddy" was sung by McVie and had a gorgeous production. The song was a soft ballad but had moments of rock guitars elegantly placed into the mix. "Gold Dust Woman" has become one of Stevie Nicks' signature songs. The longest song on "Rumours" began with a haunting drum arrangement and Stevie singing about "digging your own grave". As the song progressed, the intensity built and concluded with a frenzy and a wild guitar solo by Lindsey Buckingham.
The wrong answers appeared on other Fleetwood Mac albums or solo releases. "Edge Of Seventeen" was on Stevie's 1981 debut solo album and "Trouble" was a 1981 Lindsey Buckingham solo single. "Rhiannon" and "Landslide" were on their 1975 self-titled album. "Tusk" and "Tango In The Night" were singles on albums with the same titles. "Little Lies" also appeared on "Tango In The Night" in 1987. "Gypsy" appeared on their 1982 album "Mirage".
