The name was based on John Lennon's high school's name, Quarry Bank High School.

John started the band in 1956 with a couple of high school buddies. McCartney joined in 1957 with Harrison coming on board a year later.

Lennon started the band in '56 with some of his friends from school. Paul and George joined in the following years.
Starr didn't join the other three until after the formation of The Beatles.
