B.B. got the nickname when he worked as a disk jockey at a local R&B radio station when he moved to Memphis, TN the second time. The first time he came to Memphis he went through a few months of hardships and decided to head back to Mississippi. The nickname was later shortened to Blues Boy and then eventually to B.B.

Her name was Lucille. B.B. ran back in the building when he realized he had left his guitar inside. B.B. got out of the building and the next morning he named the guitar Lucille to remind himself to never do anything like that again! He has named every one of his guitars Lucille since that day.
