Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
FYI - All incorrect songs were from 1975.
1. "Careless Whisper" (Wham!) was written by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. It became a commercial success around the world. It reached number one in nearly 25 countries, selling about six million copies worldwide, with two million of them in the US.
2. "Like a Virgin" (Madonna) was written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. It became Madonna's first number-one single on the record charts in Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, and the US. It was the first of 12 number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 for her.
3. "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" (Wham!) was written by George Michael. It became their first UK and US number one hit. Michael's inspiration for the song was a scribbled note intended to read "wake me up before you go" but with "up" accidentally written twice, so Ridgeley wrote "go" twice on purpose.
4. "I Want to Know What Love Is" (Foreigner) was written by Mick Jones. It became Foreigner's first number-one single in the US and UK. The song also hit number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden.
5. "I Feel for You" (Chaka Khan) was written by Prince. It became the recipient of two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for Chaka Khan. Khan's version featured rapping from Melle Mel (of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five).
6. "Out of Touch" (Daryl Hall & John Oates) was written by Daryl Hall & John Oates. This song was their last Billboard Hot 100 number-one single. It also became the duo's fourteenth consecutive top 40 hit since 1980. According to Oates, he came up with the chorus while randomly playing around with a synthesizer that he did not know how to use.
7. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (Tears for Fears) was written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes. It is one of the band's signature songs. Tears for Fears stated that the driving shuffle rhythm was influenced by Simple Minds' 1983 song "Waterfront".
8. "Money for Nothing" (Dire Straits) was written by Mark Knopfler and Sting. It was Dire Straits' most commercially successful single and won the Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal Grammy award.
9. "Crazy for You"(Madonna) was written by John Bettis and Jon Lind for the film Vision Quest. It ushered in a new musical direction for Madonna, as she had not previously released a ballad as a single.
10. "Take On Me" (a-ha) was written by Magne Furuholmen, Morten Harket and Pål Waaktaar. In Norway, (a-ha's native country), "Take On Me" re-entered the VG-Lista singles chart, reaching a new peak of number one, a year after it was first released.
11. "Everytime You Go Away" (Paul Young) was written and composed by Daryl Hall. It was first recorded by the duo Hall & Oates but was not released as a single. The version by Paul Young became an international hit, reaching number one in the US and number four in the UK.

13. "Can't Fight This Feeling" (REO Speedwagon) was written by Kevin Cronin. It was REO Speedwagon's second number-one hit on the U.S. charts (the first being 1981's "Keep on Loving You"). They performed the song at the 1985 Live Aid concert where they were introduced by Chevy Chase.
