2. "My Prerogative" (Bobby Brown) was written by Bobby Brown, Aaron Hall and Teddy Riley. It was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best R&B Urban Contemporary Single. It peaked at the top position of the chart.

3. "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" (Poison) was written by Bret Michaels, C.C. DeVille, Bobby Dall and Rikki Rockett. It is the group's signature song and is their only number-one hit in the US.

4. "Straight Up" (Paula Abdul) was written by Elliot Wolff. It was the breakthrough song for Paula Abdul from her debut studio album "Forever Your Girl". It brought her widespread public attention and has remained her biggest international hit to date, reaching the top ten in over eleven countries.

5. "Miss You Much" (Janet Jackson) was written by James Harris III and Terry Lewis. It was the longest-running number-one single of 1989 and it became the second number one hit of Janet Jackson's career after "When I Think of You" (1986).

9. "Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley" (Will to Power) was written by Peter Frampton, Allen Collins and Ronnie Van Zant. The song combines two previously recorded rock songs: "Baby, I Love Your Way" by British-born singer Peter Frampton and "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

10. "Giving You the Best That I Got" (Anita Baker) was written by Anita Baker, Skip Scarborough, and Randy Holland. The song won Grammys for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female and Best R&B Song. It was also nominated for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

12. "Waiting For a Star to Fall" (Boy Meets Girl) was written by Shannon Rubicam and George Merrill. It was inspired by an actual falling star that Rubicam had seen during a Whitney Houston concert.

13. "Lost in Your Eyes" (Debbie Gibson) was written by Debbie Gibson. The ballad climbed to number one and remained there for three weeks, becoming her most successful single. It also reached number one for three weeks in Canada.

14. "Don't Wanna Lose You" (Gloria Estefan) was written by Gloria Estefan. The song reached number one in the US, where it became her second number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 after "Anything for You" (1988). It earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

15. "Heaven" (Warrant) was written by Jani Lane. The song is Warrant's most commercially successful single, spending two weeks at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song had previously been recorded by Jani Lane and Steven Sweet's old band, Plain Jane.
