Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first part of the colorful name of the sea God parted for the Israelites. (Exodus 14)

Answer: Red

Scripture tells of God parting the Red Sea for the Israelites as they made an exodus out of Egypt. According to Exodus 14, the Israelites crossed the parted sea with the Egyptian army in pursuit. However, when the Egyptians got part way across, the sea became no longer parted and they were obliterated.

Verse 28 in the NKJV states, "Not so much as one of them remained."
2. The color of clothing worn by an angel at Christ's empty tomb. (Matthew 28:3)

Answer: White

The angel at Christ's empty tomb was dressed in white clothes. Matthew 28:2-3 in the NKJV explains things this way: "And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow."

Scripture goes on to tell of a resurrected Jesus Christ appearing before a number of people.
3. The color of the horse after the third seal was broken. (Revelations 6:5)

Answer: Black

The sixth chapter of Revelation tells of six seals being opened by the Lamb. After the third seal, Scripture tells of a scarcity of essential items on the earth and the arrival of a black horse with a rider holding scales in his hands.

Revelation 6:5-6 in the NKJV explains things this way: "When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, 'Come and see.' So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, 'A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine'."
4. The color of the robe Jesus was forced to wear before His crucifixion. (John 19:2)

Answer: Purple

After Jesus was arrested, humiliated and tried in a kangaroo court, He was ruthlessly beaten and tortured by Roman soldiers. After twisting a crown of thorns and putting it on His head, they put Him in a purple robe.

In Biblical times, purple was the color worn by royalty. However, in this case, the severely beaten Jesus was dressed in a purple robe, while wearing a crown of thorns, to apparently show He was the king of nothing.
5. The color of the grass Jesus commanded the multitude to sit on before He miraculously fed them with a pittance of food. (Mark 6:39)

Answer: Green

The Bible is often devoid of details with a minimal number of words often devoted to a topic. For example, the death of James, one of the original twelve disciples is summed up in one short sentence.

In this case, John Mark, the writer of the Gospel of Mark, adds some additional detail to his account of Jesus feeding a multitude with five loaves and two fish. Before performing the miracle, Mark tells of Jesus commanding the people to "sit down in groups on the green grass."
6. The color of a hair no one wanted to be found on their body. (Leviticus 13:30)

Answer: Yellow

The last thing a person wanted to be found on their body was a yellow hair in Biblical times. A yellow hair indicated a person had leprosy, a dread disease with no known cure. Lepers were outcast from their communities and there was no way they could be re-instated unless there was miraculous turn around.

Leviticus 13:29-30 in the NKJV explains things this way: "If a man or woman has a sore on the head or the beard, then the priest shall examine the sore; and indeed if it appears deeper than the skin, and there is in it thin yellow hair, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a scaly leprosy of the head or beard."
7. The color of hair that brings splendor to old men. (Proverbs 20:29)

Answer: Gray

According to Proverbs 20:29 in the NKJV, "The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is their gray head."

Solomon is generally credited with writing most of the content in Proverbs.

Gray hair is also mentioned in Psalm 71:18. The writer of the Psalm, in the NKJV, states: "Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come."

The author of Psalm 71 is not mentioned. However, many scholars believe David was the writer.
8. The color of Joseph's tunic. (Genesis 37:3, NKJV)

Answer: Many colors

Joseph's tunic, of course, consisted of "many colors" according to Scripture.

Jacob, Joseph's father, favored him over his 11 other sons and this created tremendous jealousy in the family. Presentation of the tunic of many colors to Joseph had the brothers seeing red and they ended up selling him into slavery.

After being sold in to slavery, Joseph would ascend to become the second most powerful man in Egypt, surpassed by only the Pharaoh.
9. The color of priestly robes worn by Aaron's sons. (Exodus 28:1-31)

Answer: Blue

Exodus 28 provides precise details about how priests were to be dressed when they performed their sacred duties. According to the passage, the priests were to wear a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, a skillfully woven tunic, a turban, and a sash. Verse 5 states the garments were to be made from fine linen with gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread. Read down to Verse 31, and it tells of the robe of the ephod being all blue.

Serving as priests were Aaron and his four sons -- Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
10. The color of sheep Jacob was to keep out of Laban's flock. (Genesis 30:32, NKJV)

Answer: Brown

Jacob and Laban made an agreement Jacob could keep a sheep that was born brown, spotted or speckled. (Rather than brown, the NIV uses the word 'colored' and the Easy to Read Version uses the word 'black'.)

If the sheep was white and without specks or spots, its normal color, Laban would keep it.

Scripture tells of Jacob orchestrating things so a large number of sheep were born brown, spotted or speckled.

Genesis 30:43 tells of Jacob becoming "exceedingly prosperous."
