Pashur was the temple official in Jerusalem. He heard Jeremiah prophesying outside the gate of Benjamin and had him put in the stocks. The next day when he was released, Jeremiah told Pashur that the Lord said Pashur and his family would be exiled to Babylon where they would die in captivity.

The Lord told Jeremiah to purchase a field from his cousin, Hanamel, that was located in Anathoth. Jeremiah spent nearly two years locked up for desertion and prophesying before King Zedekiah released him into the courtyard that was considered a much better prison. When Jeremiah was finally released it was by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar close to two years after being imprisoned.
