Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Brighton and Hove Albion F.C. were founded in which year?

Answer: 1901

The club was formed from the ashes of a team called Brighton and Hove Rangers in 1901, with the inaugural meeting taking place at a pub called the Seven Stars in Ship street.
2. Brighton and Hove Albion didn't join the Football League until 1920 - in which league did they participate prior to this?

Answer: Southern League

The Southern League was the strongest league outside of the Football League in the early 20th century, with Brighton's rivals during their spell there between 1901 and 1920 including Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth, Southampton and West Ham United.
3. What colour shirts have Brighton and Hove Albion worn throughout their history?

Answer: Blue & White

Blue and white have been the first-choice colours of Brighton and Hove Albion since their formation. Shirt designs tend to change from season to season, but the most common one worn by Albion is blue and white vertical stripes.
4. Which stadium was home to Brighton and Hove Albion from the early 20th century until 1997?

Answer: Goldstone Ground

Albion first played at the Goldstone Ground in Hove in 1902. They remained there for 95 years before the ground was controversially sold to developers to try and clear the club's debts. The record attendance for a game at the stadium was 36,747 for a match against Fulham in 1958.
5. Although they have been known as the Seagulls since the mid-1970s, what was their nickname before that?

Answer: Dolphins

The crest of the city of Brighton and Hove contained two dolphins, which led to the club adopting this nickname. However, during a game against arch-rival Crystal Palace in February 1976, the Brighton fans responded to chants of "eagles, eagles" from visiting fans with a rhyming "seagulls, seagulls" reply.

The club decided to adopt this moniker as their new nickname, which is quite appropriate, as you are far more likely to encounter a seagull than a dolphin on a visit to the Sussex city!
6. After spending a number of decades in the lower divisions of the Football League, Albion finally reached the top flight in 1979. Their first ever season in the First Division saw them battle successfully against relegation, helped by 16 goals from which striker?

Answer: Peter Ward

Albion spent much of the early months of the 1979-80 season in the relegation places, but a good run of results around the Christmas/New Year period saw them pull clear of trouble. Peter Ward spent five years with the club from 1975-1980, and scored 79 goals in 178 league appearances. Sadly for Brighton fans, he was sold to Nottingham Forest in October, 1980.
7. Brighton and Hove Albion reached their first F.A. Cup final in 1983, losing to Manchester United after a replay. Which Brighton player had the chance to win it in the final minute of the first game, only to see his close-range shot saved by United goalkeeper Gary Bailey?

Answer: Gordon Smith

With the score tied at 2-2 in the closing seconds of the first game, Gordon Smith had the chance to win the cup for Brighton. BBC radio commentator Peter Jones famously said "and Smith must score", but he didn't, and Albion were well beaten in the replay.

The quote has been immortalized in the title of a club fanzine, although, to be fair to Smith, Bailey made a good save, and much easier chances are missed in the world of football on a regular basis.
8. In 2011, Brighton and Hove Albion moved into a brand new stadium on the outskirts of the city. What is the official non-corporate name for their new ground?

Answer: Falmer Stadium

After Brighton left the Goldstone Ground in 1997, they spent two years ground-sharing with Gillingham F.C. before returning to the city to a temporary home at Withdean Stadium. This was an athletics stadium which was not at all suitable for professional football, and the club's dreams were finally realised when Falmer Stadium was opened in 2011.

The corporate name in its early years was the Amex (American Express Community Stadium), but, as such names change from time to time, I have used the non-corporate moniker for this question.
9. In 2017, Brighton and Hove Albion won promotion to the Premier League, their first top-flight appearance in 34 years. Who was the manager who guided them to promotion?

Answer: Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton took charge of Brighton in December, 2014, and saved them from relegation to League One. In his second full-season in charge, he led them to promotion from the Championship and a return to top-flight football for the first time since 1983.

Despite keeping them in the Premier League in each of the next two seasons, he was sacked after a poor run of results towards the end of season 2018-19.
10. Brighton's record league victory during the 20th century was 9-1, which they achieved twice. Which two teams were on the receiving end of these hammerings?

Answer: Newport County & Southend United

In April, 1951, Newport were thrashed 9-1 in a Division 3 (South) match, with John McNichol scoring four times. In November, 1965, Southend were beaten by the same scoreline in a Divsion 3 encounter.
