Answer: Bristol South End

Bristol South End were formed in 1894 and became Bristol City when they adopted professionalism in 1897. They merged with local rivals Bedminster FC in 1900, and kept their City moniker.
2. After turning professional in 1897, Bristol City joined which league?

Answer: Southern League

The Southern League was the strongest league outside of the Football league in the late 19th/early 20th century, with members including clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Southampton. Bristol City became members in 1897 and remained there until being elected into The Football League in 1901.

Answer: Ashton Gate

Ashton Gate was originally the home ground of Bedminster FC, who Bristol City merged with in 1900. A record attendance figure was set in 1935 when 43,335 people watched an F.A. Cup tie against Preston North End. After a major redevelopment in 2017, the ground had an all-seated capacity of 27,000.

In the 1909 F.A. Cup, Bristol City defeated Southampton, Bury, Norwich City, and Glossop to reach the semi-finals, where they were paired with Derby County. After a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, City won the replay 2-1 at St Andrews in Birmingham. The final took place at Crystal Palace on 24th April 24th 1909, where a solitary goal by Sandy Turnbull won the trophy for Manchester United.
6. What is the avian nickname of Bristol City FC?

Answer: The Robins

Bristol City adopted the "Robins" nickname in the 1940s, their red and white colours being similar to the plumage of the bird. A robin appears on the club's crest.
7. Which one of these trophies did Bristol City NOT win during the 20th century?

Answer: Football League Cup

Clubs in English counties bordering Wales at one time entered the Welsh Cup, and Bristol City won the trophy in season 1933-34, beating another English club, Tranmere Rovers, in the final.

The Anglo-Scottish Cup was a short lived trophy of the 1970's/80's featuring clubs from both Scotland and England. Bristol City won the 1977-78 version, beating St Mirren in the final.

The Associate Members Cup was the original name of the Football League Trophy which features clubs from the second and third tiers of the Football League. Bristol City won this trophy in 1986, beating Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley.

Bristol City's best 20th century performances in the Football league Cup came in 1971 and 1989 when they reached the semi-finals.

Bristol City were playing in Division Three (South) in 1946-47 in the first Football League season following World War 2. On 28th December 1946, they thrashed Aldershot 9-0, with Don Clark scoring four times and Jackie Hargreaves also scoring a hat-trick.

Answer: Alan Dicks

Alan Dicks took over the manager's seat at Bristol City in October, 1967. After narrowly missing promotion to Division 1 in 1975, City finished the 1975-76 season in second position and returned to the top flight after a 65 years absence. After a couple of narrow escapes from relegation, City finished season 1978-79 in a respectable 13th position. Sadly, the following season saw them return to Division Two, and Dicks left his post early in the 1980-81 season.
10. Billy Wedlock won a club record 26 international caps whilst a Bristol city player, representing which country?

Answer: England

Billy Wedlock was a centre half who had two spells with Bristol City, firstly between 1900 and 1901, and later between 1905 and 1921, playing for Aberdare in between. It was during his second spell with City that he won all 26 of his caps for England, scoring two goals. He would make 403 league appearances for City, scoring 17 times.
