Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which European country would you find the beautiful city of Innsbruck?

Answer: Austria

Innsbruck is located in the western part of Austria, in the federal state of Tyrol. Its name translates to "bridge over the inn" and is a internationally renowned winter sports center.
2. Some countries are good at some sports and then there are those countries which completely dominate a sport for many years. The 1976 Winter Olympics at Innsbruck saw a nation take its fourth successive gold medal (1964-1968-1972-1976) in the men's ice hockey event. Which of the following countries took the gold?

Answer: Soviet Union

It is quite an amazing achievement that in the nine times (1964 to 1988 inclusive) the Soviet Union entered a team for this particular event they would take a medal. On seven of the nine occasions that medal was gold, and a silver (1980) and a bronze (1964) completes the impressive set. Before the dominance of the USSR it was Canada that came top of the list, winning 6 golds in 7 Olympiads (1924 to 1952 inclusive).
3. What was unusual about the lighting of the Olympic cauldron at these games?

Answer: There were two Olympic cauldrons.

Two Olympic cauldrons were lit instead of one in honor of Innsbruck hosting the Winter Olympics for the second time. The 1976 cauldron was lit by Austrian luger Josef Feistmantl. None of the other options occurred.
4. The world watched while this American female figure skater brought home the gold while sporting her trend-setting hairstyle "The Wedge"?

Answer: Dorothy Hamill

All four women were Olympic Skaters. But Dorothy Hamill won the only Gold medal in figure skating for the United States. She also started a fashion craze that had young girls cutting off their long hair which had been in style for the previous ten years.
5. Rosi Mittermaier was undoubtedly a star of the 1976 Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck. She proved to be the queen of the skis, racing her way to two gold medals and one silver. Mittermaier was denied the sweep of gold by just 0.13 seconds, the blink of an eye. What country did Rosi Mittermaier represent?

Answer: West Germany

By the Innsbruck Winter Olympiad of 1976, West Germany had been entered as a separate team to East Germany twice (1968 and 1972). As a separate entity, West Germany had already won five gold medals and Rosi Mittermaier would proceed to add a further two, the only West German golds of the Olympiad, to take the total to seven. West Germany would enter their final Winter Olympics in 1988 and by that time the country had amassed eleven gold medals.

West Germany had two golds and 10 overall medals to place 3rd in the overall medal count. Norway had three gold medals and seven medals overall.
8. Even though Innsbruck would eventually be the host city for the 1976 Winter Olympics, the event was first awarded to a well known city in Colorado. Which city was first awarded the 1976 Winter Olympcis?

Answer: Denver

The majority of the people of the state of Colorado voted against the Olympiad being held in Denver due to the event being too expensive to hold. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) then awarded the event to Whistler, Canada also withdrew due to the high costs of holding an Olympiad. Innsbruck was selected to host the event even though they hadn't put in a bid. It certainly seemed a logical choice as Innsbruck, a city that held the event in 1964, had its infrastructure in place.
9. Which of the following tricks was performed for the first time in men's figure skating at the 1976 Olympics?

Answer: Back Flip

Terry Kubicka of the USA was the first ice skater to have ever included a legal back flip in his program. This dangerous maneuver was immediately banned by the Olympic Committee at the end of the games as being too perilous to attempt, making him the first, last and only skater to have performed this maneuver at the Olympics. He placed 7th.
10. In 1976 the Austrian city of Innsbruck held the Winter Olympics for the second time. In what year did Innsbruck first hold the Winter Olympics?

Answer: 1964

The year 1976 saw Innsbruck hold the Winter Olympics for the second time in a relatively short period of time. The Austrian city first held the event in 1964 before the Olympiad moved to Grenoble, France in 1968 and to Sapporo, Japan in 1972.
