Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Houston Dynamo FC (Brian Ching MVP)

The 2006 season marked the debut of Houston Dynamo, and the club wasted little time finding success. Under head coach Dominic Kinnear, Houston finished second in the Western Conference before advancing through the playoffs to reach its first MLS Cup. Their championship opponent was the New England Revolution, who were making a second straight appearance in the final.

After a 1-1 draw through extra time, Houston prevailed 4-3 in the first penalty shootout in MLS Cup history. Forward Brian Ching earned MLS Cup MVP honours as the Dynamo captured the championship in their inaugural season.
2. Houston Dynamo FC (Dwayne De Rosario MVP)

Houston Dynamo proved their first championship was no fluke in 2007. The club again finished near the top of the Western Conference standings and returned to the playoffs looking to defend its title. A rematch with the New England Revolution awaited in the MLS Cup.

After falling behind early, Houston responded with second-half goals from Joseph Ngwenya and Dwayne De Rosario to earn a 2-1 victory. De Rosario's match-winning performance earned him MLS Cup MVP honours as the Dynamo became just the second back-to-back champion in MLS history (the first was DC United in 1996 and 1997).
3. Columbus Crew

The 2008 season was a breakthrough year for the Columbus Crew. Led by coach Sigi Schmid, Columbus finished atop the league standings, captured the Supporters' Shield, and entered the playoffs as one of MLS's strongest clubs. Their opponent in the final was the New York Red Bulls, who had entered the postseason as a wild card. Columbus controlled the match and earned a 3-1 victory behind goals from Alejandro Moreno, Chad Marshall, and Frankie Hejduk. Playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto was named MLS Cup MVP after assisting on all three goals.
4. Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake's 2009 championship was one of the most surprising in MLS history. The club finished the regular season with an 11-12-7 record and only narrowly qualified for the playoffs before putting together an impressive postseason run. That run culminated in a final against the LA Galaxy at Qwest Field in Seattle.

After a 1-1 draw through extra time, Real Salt Lake prevailed 5-4 in a penalty shootout to capture the club's first MLS Cup. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando starred in the shootout and earned MLS Cup MVP honours.
5. Colorado Rapids

The 2010 season produced another first-time champion when the Colorado Rapids captured the MLS Cup. Colorado qualified for the playoffs as a lower seed before advancing to the club's first MLS Cup under coach Gary Smith. Their final opponent was FC Dallas, who were also seeking a first league title.

After the teams traded goals in regulation, Colorado secured a 2-1 victory in extra time. Forward Conor Casey, who scored the Rapids' first goal, was named MLS Cup MVP.
6. LA Galaxy (Landon Donovan MVP)

The LA Galaxy entered the 2011 playoffs after winning the Supporters' Shield with the best regular-season record in MLS. Awaiting them in the final was the Houston Dynamo, making its first MLS Cup appearance since 2007. The championship match remained scoreless until the 72nd minute, when Landon Donovan scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory. Donovan's performance earned him MLS Cup MVP honours and delivered the Galaxy's third MLS championship.
7. LA Galaxy (Omar Gonzalez MVP)

The LA Galaxy returned to the MLS Cup in 2012 looking to defend their championship. After an inconsistent start to the season, Los Angeles climbed the standings and made another deep playoff run. For a second consecutive year, the Galaxy met the Houston Dynamo in the final. Trailing at halftime, Los Angeles rallied for a 3-1 victory with goals from Omar Gonzalez, Landon Donovan, and Robbie Keane. Gonzalez was named MLS Cup MVP as the Galaxy became the first repeat champion since Houston in 2006 and 2007.
8. Sporting Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City enjoyed another strong season in 2013, finishing near the top of the overall standings before advancing through the playoffs to reach MLS Cup. Their opponent was Real Salt Lake, another of the MLS's strongest teams. After a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time, Sporting prevailed 7-6 in a dramatic penalty shootout. Defender Aurélien Collin scored the equalizing goal and was named MLS Cup MVP.
9. LA Galaxy (Robbie Keane MVP)

The 2014 MLS Cup marked the final match of Landon Donovan's illustrious career, and the LA Galaxy ensured it ended with another championship. Los Angeles finished among the league's best teams during the regular season and earned the right to host the final. Standing in their way were the New England Revolution, who were appearing in their first MLS Cup since 2007.

After a 1-1 draw in regulation, the Galaxy secured a 2-1 victory in extra time when Robbie Keane scored the winner. Keane was named MLS Cup MVP as Los Angeles captured a record fifth MLS Cup title.
10. Portland Timbers

The second decade of MLS championships concluded with a breakthrough for the Portland Timbers in 2015. Competing in just their fifth MLS season, Portland put together a strong playoff run and advanced to the final against the Columbus Crew. The Timbers got off to a fast start when Diego Valeri scored after just 27 seconds, the fastest goal in MLS Cup history. Portland added a second goal minutes later and held on for a 2-1 victory to secure the club's first MLS championship. Valeri was named MLS Cup MVP.
