Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It what year was the Brian Clough Stand opened?

Answer: 1980

Nottingham Forest Football Club is located in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, England. Originally, the stand was known as the Executive Stand. The stand was renamed 19th September 1999, in honour of Brian Clough, who was the manager between 6th January 1975 and 8th May 1993.

It was during this period that Nottingham Forest was a very successful football club under the management of Brian Clough.
2. What did the FA decide for the game between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United in the FA Cup sixth round of 1974?

Answer: Game was declared void

The 6th round match was played on 9th March 1974 in Newcastle. Newcastle went behind 1-3 after a penalty was awarded (and a Newcastle defender was sent off), and the home fans invaded the pitch. The referee blew his whistle and ordered the players off the pitch. The police removed the fans from the pitch, and the game resumed around ten minutes later. Newcastle caught their second wind, despite being a plater down, and drew level to make the score 3-3. In the last minute, Bobby Moncur scored the winning goal, and so Newcastle won the match 4-3.

The story didn't end there, though. Forest wasn't happy and appealed to the FA. The FA looked at the way the game ended and decided the match was void and should be played again on neutral ground. The match was replayed at Goodison Park on 18th March 1974, ending in a 0-0 after extra time. A further replay took place at Goodison Park three days later, which was won 1-0 by Newcastle, with the goal scored by Super Mac.
3. Nottingham Forest's official mascot is Robin Hood.

Answer: True

Robin Hood, the Nottingham Forest's official mascot, first appeared in 2007 and was seen at the ground until 2015, when he went on a hiatus. The good news was he returned in 2018 on a permanent basis. Robin Hood is well known in Nottingham's folklore, as Robin Hood and his merry men lived in Sherwood Forest, in Nottingham. Robin's return to the club corresponds with the opening of a brand-new children's activity room located in the Family Stand area of the Peter Taylor Stand.
4. When did Nottingham Forest first move to the City Ground?

Answer: 1898

Nottingham Forest moved to the City Ground on September 3rd, 1898. The ground was named in honour of being granted city status. Before the ground was officially launched, Forest played a match against Blackburn Rovers on the first day of the 1898-99 season. The photo shows the ground in 1898. To get the new ground built, three thousand pounds was needed. Two thousand pounds were raised from a mixture of local businesses, fans, and members of the club who bought "New Ground Scheme" bearer bonds. Once the city ground was built, it was said the football pitch was the best in England.

In 1957 the first of many improvements to the ground was the construction of the East Stand. Further improvements continued in the 1960s with improvements the terraces. Between 1992 and 1996, development on the Bridgford Stand and Trent End took place.
5. Who was the England goalkeeper who played for Nottingham Forest from 1977 until 1982?

Answer: Peter Shilton

With league and European Cup wins, Peter Shilton's position with Nottingham Forest was a time of great success. After joining the team in 1977, he was instrumental in Brian Clough's rise to the top. Forest were promoted to the First Division, which they won in their first season back (it was their first-ever title); it was at the same time Shilton arrived.

After that, he kept clean sheets in both finals in the European Cup. Peter Shilton moved from Stoke City to Forest in September 1977. In the five years Peter played for the club, he played in 202 games.
6. Nottingham Forest's anthem is based on what song?

Answer: Mull of Kintyre

Nottingham Forest's anthem is based on the song "Mull of Kintyre," originally by Paul McCartney and Wings. Home supporters started to sing their version of the song in 1978 after the club's very successful season in 1977-1978. Because the River Trent is very close to the ground, part of the lyrics reference the Trent.

The chorus of the song starts, "City Ground, oh mist rolling in from the Trent, my desire is always to be here, oh City Ground." Other adapted lyrics often sung include "We are Forest, Nottingham Forest; we are by far the greatest team the world has ever seen" and "I'm Forest 'til I die, I know I am, I'm sure I am, I'm Forest 'til I die!" -- there may be other versions of the lyrics, but these seem to be the most popular.
7. Nottingham Forest won the European Cup in two consecutive years. Can you recall what those years were?

Answer: 1979 and 1980

Forest became the 7th club to win the European Cup in consecutive years. The first six were - Real Madrid (they won the first five 1956 to 1960), Benfica (1961 and 1962), Inter Milan (1964 and 1965), Ajax Amsterdam (three titles 19771 to 1973), Bayern Munich (1975 & 1975), and Liverpool (1977 & 1978). The European Cup became the UEFA Champions League at the start of the 1992-93 season.
These two wins in 1979 and 1980 gave Forest a unique unique distinction: more European titles than domestic titles (one, in 1978).
8. Who joined Brian Clough as his assistant in July 1976?

Answer: Peter Taylor

Peter Taylor left Brighton & Hove Albion, where he was the manager, to join Brian Clough. The pair had worked together before on other occasions, first at Hartlepool United, where Clough appointed him as his assistant. In 1967, Clough and Taylor moved to Derby County. Both Clough and Taylor resigned in October 1973 due to the working relationship with the board of directors.

In November 1973 the pair joined Brighton & Hove Albion. However, Brian left in 1974, leaving Peter in charge at Brighton. Peter left Brighton in 1976 to team up again with Brian at Nottingham Forest. In May 1982 Taylor announced his retirement, but by November 1982 Peter joined Derby County as their new manager. In April 1984 Peter Taylor announced he was to retire permanently. Sadly, Peter Taylor passed away on holiday in Spain on the 4 October 1990, aged only 62.
9. Nottingham Forest has several nicknames, including "The Reds", and just "Forest". What is another nickname that is less common?

Answer: Tricky Trees

The term "Tricky Trees" goes back over a hundred years. The type of football Forest played at that time was considered more sophisticated, and their skill at passing the ball around was different from other teams in that era. Lots of teams at that time played the more common "kick and rush" style.

Because Forest preferred a passing game, it was said to be "tricky." The tree part was added because of the connection to Sherwood Forest. When Forest was first formed in 1865, they played their games at Forest Racecourse from 1865 to 1878, which at that time was part of Sherwood Forest. That's where the term "Tricky Trees" comes from.

Nottingham Forest has played at a number of different locations. Between 1879 and 1881, they relocated to the Meadows, Castle Ground, their second location. Between 1873 and 1882, Trent Bridge. The Parkside Ground followed in 1882-1885, and the Gregory Ground followed in 1885-1890. Next on the list was the Town Ground from 1890 to 1898 before moving to the City Ground in 1898.
10. Who did Nottingham Forest beat in the 1978 League Cup Final?

Answer: Liverpool

The League Cup Final was played on 18th March 1978, at Wembley Stadium. The game finished as a 0-0 draw after extra time, so the game involved a replay that was to be played on 22nd March 1978 at Manchester United's home ground (Old Trafford). Nottingham Forest won the replay, with John Robertson scoring from the penalty in the 54th minute after a foul by Phil Thompson on John O'Hare.

Cup game details:

In the second round, Forest beat West Ham 5-0 on the 30th of August.
Last 32: Forest beat Notts County 4-0 on the 25th of October 1977.
Last 16: Forest beat Aston Villa 4-2 on the 29th of November 1977.
Quarter-Finals: Bury 0-3 Forest on 17 January 1978.
Semi-finals: Leeds United 1-3 Forest on the 8th of February 1978
Final: Forest 1-0 Liverpool. On the 22nd of March 1978.

The win for Nottingham Forest meant that Forest became the first club to achieve a League Champions - League Cup double (when they won the 1977-78 League title a month later).
