Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in the world is Sapporo, the host of the 1972 Winter Games?

Answer: Japan

The 1940 Winter Olympics were scheduled to be held in Sapporo, but due to Japan's invasion of China in 1937, the city stood down. The games were later cancelled because of World War II. However, Sapporo won the rights to the Winter Olympics for 1972 and, at the time, was the largest city to host the games.
2. As ever, several cities competed against each other in the hopes of being the host city. Which of these cities was NOT one of the candidates?

Answer: Rome, Italy

Despite Banff, Canada being the favourite to win, the IOC awarded the XI Olympic Winter Games to Sapporo. The official announcement was made in Rome in 1966.
3. Finishing in first place overall was which nation, with 8 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals?

Answer: Soviet Union

The Soviet Union performed superbly at the games, gaining twice as many gold medals as nearest rivals Switzerland, East Germany and The Netherlands. Japan won three medals, one of each colour, and finished 11th overall; coincidentally, this was the 11th Winter Olympics.
4. Which of the mountain venues played host to the bobsled, luge and slalom ski events?

Answer: Mount Teine

Okuryama and Miyanomori Jump Hills were, true to their names, used for the 90m and 70m ski jump events respectively. Mount Eniwa was used for the downhill ski events.
5. Which country performed well in the men's 70m ski jumping events, winning gold, silver and bronze?

Answer: Japan

All three of Japan's medals were won in the 70m normal hill ski jumping event. Yukio Kasaya, Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi finished in first, second and third respectively, ahead of Norwegian Ingolf Mork, Czech Jiøí Raska, and Polish Wojciech Fortuna, the latter claiming gold in the 90m large hill ski jump.
6. Which of these countries competed in their first Winter Olympics in 1972?

Answer: The Philippines

There were two newcomers to the 1972 games - the Philippines and the Republic of China. Unfortunately, no athletes from either of these countries managed to win a medal.
7. Francisco Fernandez Ochoa won Spain's first Winter gold medal in which event?

Answer: Men's slalom

Scoring Spain's first and only medal at the 1972 games was Francisco Fernandez Ochoa, who finished the slalom event a clear one second faster than rival Gustav Thöni from Italy.
8. Were any new events introduced in the Sapporo Games?

Answer: No

As with the 1968 Winter Olympics, the events were alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined, ski jumping, and speed skating. The next time a new event made it into the games was short track speed skating at Albertville, France in 1992.
9. Which country pulled out of the ice hockey event during a dispute over the amateur status of many hockey players?

Answer: Canada

Austrian skier Karl Schranz was banned from the games by the IOC president when he was accused of being a professional. Canada refused to send an ice hockey team because it felt that some teams were professionals, and wished to send the best they had to compete too.
10. On which date was the opening ceremony of the games?

Answer: February 3, 1972

Running from February 3 to 13, the games were a success for Japan, who not only performed better than they had previously, but gained a significant profit by selling broadcast rights for the games. The next time Japan hosted the Winter Games was in 1998, at Nagano.
