In 1907, Everton were defeated 2-1, also at Crystal Palace. Wembley was the venue for a 4-2 triumph over West Bromwich Albion in 1935.
5. What is the avian nickname of Sheffield Wednesday?

Answer: Owls

Sheffield Wednesday were originally nicknamed The Blades, before their city rivals Sheffield United adopted this moniker. The Owls nickname dates from the early 20th century, and there is some dispute as to its origin. The club play in the Owlerton district of Sheffield, a player called George Robertson presented the club with an owl mascot in 1912, whilst the city was once covered with alder trees, pronounced "owler" in Yorkshire dialect. Whatever the correct reason, the owl has been the official nickname for over a century, and the club's badge features the bird.
6. Who was the manager who led Sheffield Wednesday to consecutive top flight titles in seasons 1928-29 and 1929-30?

Answer: Robert Brown

In season 1928-29 they finished the season a single point ahead of Leicester City to win the title as champions of Egland then, the following season, finished top of the pile again, ten points ahead of runners-up Derby County. Brown would retire from football management in 1933.
7. Sheffield Wednesday's best performance in European competition came in the 1961-62 Fairs Cup (predecessor of the UEFA Cup). Which giant of European football defeated them in the quarter-finals?

Answer: Barcelona

A second-place finish in the 1960-61 season saw Sheffield Wednesday qualify for European competition for the first time. The first round of the 1961-62 Fairs Cup ended in a dramatic 7-6 aggregate win over French club Lyon, whilst, in the second round, Italian club AS Roma were comfortably dispatched 4-1.

The first leg of the quarter-finals at Hillsborough saw Barcelona defeated 3-2 in front of 52,353 fans, but the Spaniards turned things around at the Nou Camp, winning 3-0 to advance to the semis.
8. The only major domestic honour that had so far evaded Sheffield Wednesday was the League Cup, but this trophy was finally annexed in 1991. Which team did Wednesday defeat in the final at Wembley to lift the cup?

Answer: Manchester United

In the 1990-91 League Cup competition, Sheffield Wednesday defeated Brentford, Swindon Town, Derby County and Coventry City before Chelsea were seen off in a two-legged semi-final. On 21st April, at Wembley, a 37th minute goal from John Sheridan proved enough to see Wednesday defeat Manchester United 1-0.
9. Nigel Worthington set a Sheffield Wednesday club record of 50 international caps representing which country?

Answer: Northern Ireland

Nigel Worthington, from Ballymena, County Antrim, joined Sheffield Wednesday from Notts County in 1984. In his ten years at Hillsborough, he made 338 league appearances scoring 12 times, before signing for Leeds United. He would make 66 international appearances for Northern Ireland, 50 of which came during his time as a Wednesday player.
10. In season 1992-93, Sheffield Wednesday reached the finals of both the League Cup and the F.A. Cup, but had the misfortune to lose both of them to which team?

Answer: Arsenal

In the 1993 League Cup, Sheffield Wednesday saw off Blackburn Rovers in the semi-final, to set up a final date with Arsenal at Wembley on April 18th. John Harkes gave Wednesday the lead, before Paul Merson and Steve Morrow scored to give Arsenal a 2-1 victory.

In the F.A. Cup, Wednesday faced city rivals Sheffield United in a Wembley semi-final, which they won 2-1. Arsenal also had a local rival to overcome in the semis, edging out Tottenham Hotspur 1-0. This meant the the two clubs would meet in both major finals in the same season. On May 15th, a David Hirst goal for Wednesday cancelled out Ian Wright's opener and there was no further scoring, so it was back to Wembley yet again five days later. Ian Wright again gave Arsenal the lead, before Chris Waddle equalised. It looked like a first-ever penalty shoot-out would be required to settle who lifted the trophy, until Andy Linighan popped up with the winner one minute from the end of extra time to break Wednesday's hearts.
