Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these Hall of Fame pitchers entered the record books by giving up a home run to the first-ever batter that they faced?

Answer: Bob Gibson

The former Harlem Globetrotter and St. Louis Cardinal pitching great started his career off on the wrong rubber. On April 15, 1959, the Dodgers hosted the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium. Dodger third baseman Jim Baxes led off the bottom of the first inning when he initiated Gibson with the home run.

The Dodgers won the game 5-0. To rub more salt in Gibson's eyes, it was Baxes only Major League season. Gibson would give up only three more home runs in his rookie season, and later be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1981.
2. The idea in baseball is to get runners on base, then have them score however possible. This didn't work very well in 1956 when which team left 20 runners on base during a game with the Red Sox, setting a Major League record?

Answer: Yankees

Although the Yankees went to the World Series in 1956, that was very unlike the team. On September 21st against the Red Sox, the Yankees left 20 in pinstripes behind and lost the game 13-7. The Yankees went on to defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series.
3. What do Babe Ruth, Paul Molitor, Rod Carew, and Honus Wagner all have in common?

Answer: They all stole home at least 10 times in their career

Stealing home plate was a bit more common in early baseball, but to see Molitor do this from 1978-1998 was amazing. He spent most of his career with the Brewers. With a record likely to never be broken is Ty Cobb, who stole home 54 times in his career.
4. Which two teams set an American League record for the longest extra-inning game in 1984?

Answer: White Sox - Brewers

On Tuesday May 8, 1984, the White Sox hosted the Brewers in this 25-inning game. The Brewers led while going into the bottom of the ninth inning, 3-1. Chicago tied it although Rollie Fingers was on the mound. In the top of the 21st inning, the Brewers' Ben Oglivie hit a three-run home run, and the game finally looked as if it would end.

Not giving up, the White Sox came back with three runs off Brewers' pitcher Chuck Porter to tie it. With one out in the bottom of the 25th, Harold Baines of the White Sox finally ended it with a home run off Chuck Porter.

The game took 8 hours and 6 minutes to complete.
5. Who knows what the manager was thinking when this pitcher tied a 68-year old record by allowing six home runs in only five innings of a game in 2004. Who was this Red Sox pitcher?

Answer: Tim Wakefield

The Tigers hosted the Red Sox on August 8, and they weren't very good hosts. Wakefield was finally yanked by manager by manager Terry Francona after five innings. The home runs came from Ivan Rodriguez who hit two, Carlos Pena, Eric Munson, Dmitri Young, and Craig Monroe. Believe it or not, the Red Sox still won the game 11-9. Wakefield led Boston pitchers by giving up 29 home runs in the season.
6. Which American League team set a Major League record in 1996 by giving up a horrendous 241 home runs in the season?

Answer: Tigers

The other three teams all won their divisions. 1996 was a very dismal season for the Tigers with 109 losses. Pitcher Felipe Lira took the honors by giving up 30 home runs, Greg Gohr dished up 24, and Brian Williams gave up 21 to all lead the team. Detroit's 109 losses in the season was their worst record in franchise history. Buddy Bell was in his first managing season, but the Tigers still kept him on for another two seasons.
7. Which member of the 500 Home Run Club set a record for scoring six times in one game, and did it twice in his career?

Answer: Mel Ott

Ruth was the only other member listed who is in the 500 Club. Ott was a powerful New York Giant in his entire career. On top of hitting 511 home runs, he scored six times in a game on August 4, 1934. Raising more than eyebrow, he did it again 10 seasons later on April 30, 1944.
8. Which World Series team in 1988 set an American League record for throwing an amazing 76 balks in the season?

Answer: Athletics

With an all-star pitching cast in 1988, Oakland's pitchers were afraid to throw the ball without fear of a balk being called. Dave Stewart led the team by throwing 16 balks, and Bob Welch threw another 13. Stewart still finished fourth in the voting for the Cy Young Award, but the excessive balks were a factor.

The Dodgers won the World Series four games to one. This was the World Series that saw the gimpy Kirk Gibson hit his historical game one walk-off home run.
9. In 1988, Dodger Orel Hershiser broke Don Drysdale's record of 58 consecutive scoreless innings when he threw 59. When Drysdale set his record in 1968, it broke the 55-year old record set by which pitcher?

Answer: Walter Johnson

The great Hall of Famer and Washington Senator Walter Johnson threw 55.2 scoreless innings in 1913. His 1913 season was only one of many career highlights as he went 36-7, won the AL MVP, and threw for the Triple Crown.
10. Which National League team set a Major League record by going 57 seasons without throwing a no-hitter?

Answer: Phillies

In 1906, the Phillies' Johnny Lush threw a no-hitter in a 6-0 with over Brooklyn. 1964 finally broke the streak when Jim Bunning threw a no-no against the Mets in a 6-0 win. The Detroit Tigers set an American League record by going 39 seasons from 1913-1951 without having one of their own throw a no-hitter.
