Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With which team did Mick Channon win the English Football League Cup in 1985?

Answer: Norwich City

A legend at Southampton, Channon also had spells with Manchester City, Newcastle United, Bristol Rovers, Norwich City and Portsmouth. In his 20-year career, he won two domestic trophies, the FA Cup with Saints in 1976 and the League Cup with Norwich 1985. Ironically, Norwich defeated Sunderland in that League Cup final, but those same two clubs were then relegated at the end of the season. Since retiring from football in 1986, Channon has become a successful horse trainer, topping the 100-winner mark (with 123) for the first time in 2002.
2. With his victory in 1952, Australian Horace Lindrum became the first non-British player to win which annual sporting event?

Answer: The World Snooker Championship

The World Snooker Championships were first staged in 1927, with the legendary Joe Davis winning the first 15 titles. The most dominant players in the post-war era are Stephen Hendry, with seven victories, and Steve Davis and Ray Reardon, each of whom have six. Although the event now has a true international flavor, with competitors from around the world, only three non-British players have ever won the title, Australia's Horace Lindrum in 1952, Canada's Cliff Thorburn in 1980, and Ireland's Ken Doherty in 1997.
3. There was only one all-Swedish Grand Slam Men's Singles tennis final during the 20th Century, at the Australian Open in 1985. Who were the two players?

Answer: Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg

Stefan Edberg defeated Mats Wilander 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the 1985 final of the Australian Open to win the first of his six Grand Slam singles titles.
Both of these players held the #1 spot in the world rankings at some point in their careers, Wilander for four months in 1988-89 and Edberg five times from 1990-92. Wilander is also one of only nine players who have won three of the four Grand Slam titles in a single season. He won all but Wimbledon in 1988. These two were also largely responsible for Sweden's impressive David Cup record, seven consecutive finals in the 1980s.
4. Cricketer Fred Titmus took more than 150 wickets in 50+ Test matches for England, but for which Football League team did he also play professionally?

Answer: Watford

Longevity is perhaps the best word to describe the cricketing career of F.J. Titmus. He made his first class debut in 1949 as a 16-year old and his last appearance came in the 1982 Middlesex vs Surrey match. In 792 first-class matches, he took 2,830 wickets at an average of just 22.37. Although primarily remembered as an off-break bowler, Titmus was also a decent lower-order batsman, scoring over 20,000 runs at an average of 23.11 including six centuries and 105 50s. He also played professional football for Watford, having begun that side of his career as an amateur with Chelsea.
5. Which boxer, who was World Middleweight champion in 1947-1948, was born in New York City on New Year's Day 1919?

Answer: Rocky Graziano

Born Thomas Rocco Barbella, Graziano became one of the most fearsome punchers in boxing history, with 52 of his 67 career victories coming via knockouts.
After retiring from boxing, Graziano enjoyed a career as a televelsion comedian, co-hosting, "The Henny & Rocky Show", with Henny Youngman.
He was famously played by Paul Newman in the 1956 film "Somebody Up There Likes Me".
6. Which footballer broke Dino Zoff's record of 112 international caps for Italy, finishing his career in 2002 with a total of 123?

Answer: Paolo Maldini

Paolo Maldini finished his career as the holder of the appearance record for both the Italian national team and for AC Milan. He represented Italy in the final stages of four World Cups, from 1990 to 2002. In 1990, on home soil, his team were eliminated by Argentina in a penalty shootout at the semi-final stage, and four years later he lost the final in the USA against Brazil by the same method.

He also reached the final of the 2000 European Championships, losing 2-1 to France after extra time. Maldini was World Soccer Player of the Year in 1994, and runner-up in the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year.
7. When Michael Schumacher retired from Formula One racing in 2006, who was left as the only active driver who had raced against Ayrton Senna?

Answer: Rubens Barrichello

Rubens Barrichello grew up in Sao Paulo idolizing his fellow Brazilian. He made his debut on the F1 circuit with the Jordan team in 1993 at the age of 21, and so raced for a whole season against Senna, who was then killed at San Marino in the third race of the 1994 season. Schumacher's retirement after the 2006 season left Barrichello as the most experienced driver on the grid, and he then became the most experienced driver in Formula One history at the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix.
8. Tiger Woods became only the fifth golfer in history to win all four 'major' tournaments. He joined Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and which other golfer to have achieved this?

Answer: Gary Player

Gary Player won the Open in 1959, added The Masters in 1961 and the PGA a year later. He did not have to wait long to complete his grand slam, winning the US Open in 1965. He ended his career with nine victories in majors, winning the both the Masters and the Open three times and the PGA twice.

The others each won three of the majors, but could never quite complete their grand slam. Snead won all except the US Open whilst both Watson and Palmer both missed out on the PGA. Not that they didn't come close, Watson finished second in the 1978 PGA, whilst Palmer tied for second three times. Snead also finished second in the US Open three times.
9. Who were the first two sportsmen to win 'The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year' four times?

Answer: Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong

Carl Lewis won the award twice in 1983 and 1984, whilst Michael Jordan won it in three consecutive years, when at the height of his pomp from 1991-93.
Lance Armstrong became the first person to win the award four times in a row from 2002-2005. Woods first won in when he captured his first major, the 1997 Masters, and then picked up two more awards in 1999 and 2000. He matched Armstrong's achievement in earning the title for a record fourth time in 2006 and, of course, of the two it is Woods who is most likely to win a fifth award at some point.
10. Although they were common in the early days of the event, all-English finals of the World Snooker Championship are now a rarity. The last such final of the 20th century occured in 1991. Who beat Jimmy White in that year's final?

Answer: John Parrott

Jimmy White must rank as one of sport's greatest bridesmaids, having reached the World Championship final six times without ever winning. He lost to Steve David in 1984, four times to Scotland's Stephen Hendry in 1990, 92, 93 and 94, and to John Parrott in that last all-English final of 1991. Parrott on the other hand, had a 100% record in the final, having made it that far only once from his three semi-final appearances.

His other claim to fame in World Championship history is as the only player to record a whitewash in the final stages of the event, he defeated Eddie Charlton 10-0 in the first round in 1982.
