Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Until she is awakened from Wanda Maximoff's spell, Agatha believed herself to be in what type of TV program?

Answer: Crime procedural

Detective Agnes O'Connor, investigating a murder in the woods surrounding Westview, New Jersey, comes to conclusions about the case, that of a Jane Doe, by following the clues to a library and the circumstances surrounding a mysterious book: 'Dialogue and Rhetoric, Known History of Learning & Debate' (which she realizes, as initials, spells 'DARKHOLD'). And as it turns out, all the copies of that book were either stolen or burned up.

Agnes subsequently pairs up with Rio Vidal, an FBI agent, to solve the case despite her apprehension. What she comes to realize, however, when Rio visits her at her house, is that she can't determine why she's angry with her temporary partner, or much else about her life. This train of thought is derailed, however, when someone breaks into her home. It turns out to be a teenager who, though he flees through the neighbourhood, ends up apprehended after being hit by Sharon Davis' car.

The teenager is who unravels Agnes' life. He reveals some of the illusions that have been propping up her false reality before performing a chant. It pushes her to check in on the body in the morgue, discovering that it's Wanda Maximoff's body, a consequence of a fate she doesn't know. It's Rio who helps her come to the realization that she's not Agnes O'Connor at all, but Agatha Harkness.

Once Wanda's spell starts to wear off in full, Agatha discovers that she's been trapped in her own other world, a crime procedural TV show, since Wanda was under her illusion. She checks her house and checks her powers to find that she has no resources to draw upon. What she does have, however, is the teenager, locked in a closet in her living room.

It's then that Rio Vidal arrives, showing off her own capabilities as a powerful witch and itching for a fight. Agatha is able to convince her to wait, at least until she can regain her powers, for a fair match, and luckily for her, Rio allows her to pursue this. She does warn, however, that she will set the Salem Seven on her, so time is already ticking.
2. How many witches does Agatha require in the coven to access the Witches' Road?

Answer: Five

Although Agatha is prepared to get out of Westview with her newly-regained memories, it's the teen that stops her from leaving. He reveals that he was the one who undid the Scarlet Witch's magic spell, trapping her there, because he seeks the Witches' Road, intent on using it to get something he's wants the most by making it to the end. To do that, however, they would need a coven. She agrees to help, if only because it's an intriguing circumstance and because his inability to say anything about his past is of certain curiosity, but it means reaching out to a handful of witches in the vicinity.

They start by meeting Lilia Calderu in her psychic shop, and she proves her powers quite soon after they arrive. She initially refuses the offer she believes Agatha is there to propose, but upon the suggestion that Agatha can't obtain others' powers unless she's blasted with them, and with the divined knowledge that she is amongst the members of the coven, she joins.

Lilia's list leads them to Jen Kale, who specializes in potions, but who also happens to be bound from her powers and unable to perform magic. She joins to avoid an upcoming class-action lawsuit. It also takes them to Alice Wu-Gulliver, a shopping mall security guard and protection witch who doesn't believe in the Road. She ends up joining the others last-minute.

The problem is that they don't have a green witch, specializing in earth magic, to round out the coven. With clues from Lilia's list, Agatha decides to extend an invitation to a neighbour, Sharon Davis, who was also, at one time, under Wanda Maximoff's spell. Fortunately, she has a green thumb.

In the basement, as a group of six, the newly-formed coven sings 'The Ballad of the Witches' Road' just as the Salem Seven arrives and attempts to break in. The door appears and they escape into it just in the nick of time, emerging on the Witches' Road to start their quest.
3. During their first trial, the coven is poisoned by which of these?

Answer: A bottle of wine

Setting forth on the Witches' Road, the makeshift coven realizes quite quickly that they are bound to face dangers that test their capabilities, and that's when they stumble across their first obstacle.

Coming upon a 1960s-style beach home (and being forced to take on 1960s appearances), the group lets themselves in, discovering that there is no exit from the gorgeous home they've entered. Instead, they find a waiting riddle, and with that, Sharon is able to point out the seemingly obvious answer being the bottle of wine waiting for them on a nearby table. They decide to imbibe; it may be the only path forward.

It's during a quick, private moment that Jennifer confides in the teen that he should be careful. After all, Agatha was known for giving up her own child to get her hands on the Darkhold. She could turn more evil on them at any second. None of them even notice when Agatha dumps out her glass of wine, letting the others take their sips.

It turns out that the wine is poisoned, and there's very little time that elapses before the coven realizes their misfortune. Jennifer quickly deduces that the poison could only be one thing-- Alewife's Revenge-- and sets the group to finding ingredients for their antidote, brewing it in the kitchen. At the same time, Agatha tries to escape, inadvertently calling attention to the fact that the house is being submerged in water, threatening to burst in. The coven starts to suffer from hallucinations before they're finally able to prevent the poison from killing them, but as their time runs out, the water rushes in.

The coven escapes in the nick of time, returning to the road through a tunnel in the kitchen oven. The problem they find is that it's too late to save Sharon; they administered her antidote just a bit too late.
4. Alice's generational curse is beset upon the coven when which of these occurs?

Answer: A record is played

In the wake of Sharon's death, the coven rests while the teen digs her grave. Realizing that they need a green witch to replace Sharon's role amongst them, they decide to take it upon themselves to summon another despite Agatha's eagerness to keep moving. The witches decide to be careful, but the result is less than ideal since it brings forth Rio Vidal-- exactly who Agatha doesn't want to see.

Heading along the road, the coven comes across a cabin that they appear to have no choice but to enter. It appears that Alice is the one most hesitant to step foot in the spooky building, this owing to her history with the location; her mother, Lorna, once used it as a recording studio. The coven is forced to don '70s outfits and hunt for another puzzle, but it all comes to a head when teen plays a mysterious record of 'The Ballad of the Witches' Road' left for them, and when it automatically plays backwards, it unleashes a dangerous curse.

Alice is the first to feel it, indicating that she feels lighter, but Lilia and Jennifer both, one at a time, start to burn from the effects of the curse. It leads Alice to create magic circles, temporarily blocking the harmful magic, but they all agree they'll need to face the threat head-on. Alice believes that the curse is the same one that killed her mother and that, perhaps, she brought it with her to the Road. With that, though, they all realize that Lorna's version of the song brought the strength to save her daughter. Only performing it, hopping on the instruments in the room, can protect them all. And it does, causing the curse to manifest in a physical form until they can finish recording the track.

The coven escapes back to the road and they tend to their injuries-- especially the teen's-- before recognizing the strength of their combined powers and their renewed faith in their magic capabilities. Rio, to the rest of the group, alludes heavily to her past relationship with Agatha, much to everyone's concern, and when the two of them finally get time to chat in private, Agatha embraces her, attempting to share in a kiss. Rio doesn't let her, however, instead bluntly telling her that the teen isn't hers.
5. During the third trial, Agatha is possessed by her mother's spirit when she and the coven use which of these?

Answer: A Ouija board

The coven finds themselves pursued by the Salem Seven who, as it appears, have reached the Road by following Rio Vidal's summoning route. It leads the group to attempt a swift escape and puts them on the doorstep of another cabin, the site of their third trial, sending them back into the 1980s in the process.

In this trial, which Rio calls out to be Agatha's due to the blood moon, the coven is pointed in the direction of a classic Ouija board and set up to commune with the dead. They dive into this one with the warning that they must not remove their hands from the planchette or, else, they may be possessed by the spirits they're speaking with. That's exactly what appears to happen; as Agatha pretends to be visited by Sharon's spirit, she's actually possessed by her own mother, Evanora, who once tried to have her killed centuries ago.

The possession leads Agatha to attack the rest of the coven, especially when some of them attempt to abandon her and continue on the Road. It's Alice who's able to use her protection magic to rid Agatha of the spirit, but as soon as Evanora leaves, Agatha, in a fugue, draws Alice's powers from her, absorbing them and killing Alice in the process. The teen conceives of the only way to break the spell on Agatha when he manages to spell her son's name on the Ouija board and call it out, bringing him forth and creating the exit to the trial in the nick of time

In the wake of Alice's murder, as the remaining members of the coven return to the Witches Road, Agatha apologizes and claims that her actions were an accident. The teen escalates the argument until Agatha gets deep under his skin, and when this happens, his own powers emerge, allowing him to use the other witches to toss her into a mud pit. As he discards them as well, a diadem materializes on his head, indicating the source of his powers to be that of the Scarlet Witch herself.
6. Who cast the sigil on the teen, preventing the coven from knowing his name?

Answer: Lilia

As it turns out, the teen has been tagging along, pushing the coven onto and along the road with the intent to gain his own power and understanding. It started when he turned 13 and came of age, celebrating his bar mitzvah as William Kaplan. It was there, at that party, that he had his palm read by a local fortunate teller, Lilia Calderu. Reading his future, she quickly determined that a long journey would lay ahead, and with his life line broken in two it probably meant a new beginning. She didn't let on what she saw, really, but before he left, she created a sigil, preventing his identity from being revealed to other witches. She wouldn't even remember what she did, per the spell.

The bar mitzvah ended early as a result of an emergency in nearby Westview; the anomaly created by Wanda Maximoff, destabilizing, was beginning to cause havoc. On the road, headed home, this would cause an awful crash. While his parents survived the wreck, William didn't. But in that moment, his body would be inhabited by the soul of Billy Maximoff, one of Wanda's children. The resulting event would leave him unable to remember anything of his life as either William or Billy-- something that would never come back-- but it would leave him with the uncanny ability to read peoples' minds.

Three years after the accident, Billy dug into the mystery behind his true identity, managing to unearth the whereabouts of Ralph Bohner, a paranoid man who lived in Westview during Wanda's reign over it. He explained that, at that time, it wasn't just Wanda who controlled him, but Agatha Harkness; she hijacked him and made him her puppet, and he did awful things to harm her kids, Billy and Tommy, the whereabouts of whom are unknown.

All of this led Billy to Westview and to Agatha, and after he attempted to steal a personal item from her, he broke Wanda's enchantment over her, and compelled her to pursue the Witches' Road. Though the gave her his names-- both of them-- she couldn't hear them through Lilia's protective sigil.

On the Witches' Road, Billy watches as Agatha, who he tossed into the deep mud, is able to pull herself out. She acknowledges that she had an inkling towards his true identity the whole time, but now knowing, they can head on to the fourth trial and seek the answers they wanted as a duo-- powers for Agatha and Tommy for Billy.
7. It's discovered that many of Lilia's divination quirks are actually which of the following?

Answer: Her experiencing her life out of order

While Agatha and Billy continue down the Witches' Road, they argue about Billy's mother and the impact that she had on their lives. Agatha doesn't have a straight answer about Wanda's fate nor does she really indicate that she's ever been on the Witches' Road in the first place. The questioning comes to an end when they find the next trial waiting at a massive castle perched atop a hill, and inside, as they're dressed as fictional witches, they come to discover that their next task to overcome involves a tarot reading-- something neither of them are versed in. They realize their problem when they give each other faulty readings, both of which lead swords, suspended from the ceiling, to drop on them with every bad divining. Worse, before long, the ceiling starts to descend on them.

Lilia awakens to find herself plummeting through a dark void. She snaps to to inform Jennifer of what just happened, the two of them making their way through the tunnels beneath the Road, and she's forced to reveal the truth about herself-- her odd, quirky statements and memory lapses are a consequence of her condition, one that leaves her jumping to different moments in her life without any control over them. The flow of time doesn't work well for her; she experiences her life out of sequence and it's getting worse.

Jumping to the trial, Lilia is interrupted in her reading of Billy-- something that Lilia and Jennifer stumbled on quite fortunately-- but she realizes that it's her role to see to help them all. She also jumps to her very first test, brought on by her former coven leader, and is reminded that death will eventually come for them all. She was falling and that means she is going to fall; it comes down to what she can do with her remaining time. Realizing that she must complete the tarot spread for herself, she finds that everything comes together perfectly. While the swords aren't dropping, the ceiling is still falling.

Lilia ends the spread with Tower, reversed, and one last card that places her at the doorstep of fate itself-- the Death card, which implies her destination. Placement of this card allows the group to succeed in the trial, but Lilia has to reveal the truth: that Rio Vidal is none other than death, the original green witch. As the others leave out the exit, Lilia shuts the door behind them to face down the Salem Seven. Turning the Tower card upright on the table, she reverses the gravity in the room, impaling the witches on the ceiling above before falling into the void, just as she foresaw.
8. Who, as it is discovered, created the Witches' Road?

Answer: Billy

Back on the Witches' Road, and with the secret finally out, Rio and Agatha speak about their circumstance. Rio believes that Agatha was distracting her from Billy, and she was, since he disrupted the sacred balance. The Scarlet Witch, she claims, stole a second life, and because of that, she must take Billy now, but she can only do this if he willingly sacrifices himself. Agatha offers to solve this problem, but only if Rio stops pursuing her. Both agree to these terms.

Jennifer and Billy, meanwhile, contending with Lilia's sacrifice, also realize what they're up against and choose to rejoin Agatha to finish what they started, especially with only one trial left. The problem they all quickly realize is that the Road has taken them back to their shoes, right back to the beginning of the journey. The catch is that when Billy puts his shoes on, things change.

The act of putting the shoes back on sends the remaining witches to the final trial, forcing them to emerge from body bags in a morgue in Agatha's basement and commence an earth magic trial of allowing something to grow in a sterile, lifeless environment. The trial complicates when Jennifer discovers that Agatha was the one who bound her a century earlier, but the knowledge of this allows her to commence the unbinding spell, restoring her powers at long last. Because the Road gives her what she was missing, she vanishes, leaving Agatha and Billy to complete the trial alone.

Agatha tries to get Billy to empower her to end both of their trials on the Road, but when he refuses, she concedes to finding his brother who, still without a body, would be otherwise undetectable. Using his memories to find his brother's drifting spirit, he's able to compel Billy to find another body, placing Billy's spirit into it at its time of death, much like he did for himself after Wanda's spell collapsed. And with that, and a seismic crack in the floor, Billy vanishes from the room, his time on the Road complete.

Opening her locket, Agatha pulls a seed from inside of it, places it into the crack in the ground, and uses her tears to draw life from it, completing the final trial alone and returning to Westview in the middle of a great storm. Rio, waiting for her to deliver Billy to her, decides to take Agatha with her instead, but Billy, watching on, prepares to sacrifice himself in her place. It takes one comment, communicated across minds, about her son, to compel Agatha to concede. In order to save Billy, Agatha embraces Rio, kissing her to end the battle.

In the wake of the fight, Billy walks home and heads to his bedroom. Looking around there, he realizes that, this whole time, he was the one who manifested the Witches' Road, forming that realm with his mind and latent powers from the very beginning. Agatha never lied; she hadn't been to the Witches' Road before. But she knew all along.
9. Was Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch, a real person?

Answer: Yes

More than two and a half centuries before she walked the Witches' Road, Agatha went into labour, running into the woods and, alone, attempting to give birth to her child. It was then that she encountered Death, looking over to find her waiting to claim the unborn baby. Agatha begged to spare the child and, in an act of mercy, Death offered her time, though the amount was undisclosed. When Death disappeared, Agatha had her son, named Nicholas Scratch.

In the years to come, Agatha would come across covens in her travels, entering their camps using Nicholas as the perfect excuse to pass through their wards and consume their powers. Over the next six years she would teach her son to work alongside her, ensnaring witches and using them to keep her strength. Nicholas would ask her why they could not simply work with the witches, but she reminded him that none could be trusted. And over time, he would continue to question their actions, even going so far as to thwart her plans to harm others. All the while, Agatha would dread the day when Death would return for him.

And then, one night, when he was six years old, Death came for Nicholas. He kissed his mother goodbye while she swept and walked off with Death, out into the woods.

Nicholas was barely buried when Agatha started luring witches into her stead, forming covens using their shared song and draining them of their powers. It would be a technique she would employ for centuries with her final attempt drawing in Jennifer, Lilia, Alice, and Sharon. The catch was that, this last time, Billy was amongst them, there to manifest the Witches' Road for real.
10. Before departing to search for Tommy, Billy does which of these things?

Answer: Seals away the Witches' Road

Upon realizing that he was, in fact, the one responsible for bringing the Witches' Road to reality with his own powers as a child of the Scarlet Witch, Billy is confronted by the spectre of Agatha Harkness, who appears before him in his bedroom. Still figuring out her capabilities as a ghost, Agatha assures him that she did not sacrifice herself for Billy's sake in the battle against Rio; she took a calculated risk.

Agatha reconfirms that Billy did make the Road, and while the Ballad was a part of his understanding of it, she and Nicholas created it for themselves; she just used it as a con to lure other witches. The truth is that everything-- including the deaths of the rest of the coven-- was his doing, even if Agatha reassures him that she killed Alice and Lilia willingly sacrificed herself. The only one who made it out, really, was Jennifer, who emerged from the Road when she got her powers back and was spared from Agatha's plan to consume her abilities.

Agatha warns Billy to get used to the feeling of killing others, but in his stubborn refusal, he heads back to her house. He descends into the basement, sets up a ritual, and locates her spellbook, calling upon it with the intent to use her locket and banish her to the afterlife. Realizing what he's doing, Agatha uses what remaining power she has to knock the locket from his hands, confessing that she can't face her son after all that's happened. She takes it and places it on her spectral form as he stops the spell, suggesting that it's in the mercy and understanding that Billy provides that she sees her own son.

The pair realize that they might make a good coven with each other with Agatha as Billy's guide, but before this, Billy uses his powers to seal the door to the Witches' Road, restoring the basement floor with an engraving bearing Sharon, Alice, and Lilia's names. As the two ascend the stairs out into the yard, they depart, ready to go find Tommy.
