Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Captain Mainwaring's first name?

Answer: George

Captain Ceorge Mainwaring, portrayed by Arthur Lowe, was the bank manager in Walmington-on-Sea, and the self-appointed leader of the Home Guard. His first name was rarely used, apart from one episode when he invited the platoon back to his house for a party and insisted on the usual formalities being dropped.
2. What character was played by Edward Sinclair?

Answer: Mr. Yeatman (the Verger)

Maurice Yeatman was the verger of St Aldhelm's Church and was in charge of the church hall where the Home Guard held their parades. He was a close confidant of Warden Hodges, Captain Mainwaring's arch-enemy.

Edward Sinclair played the part of Mr Yeatman from the fifth episode in 1969 until the last series in 1977. His sudden death that year prompted Arthur Lowe to declare that "With the loss of Teddy, it is now quite clear that there will be no more 'Dad's Army.'"
3. What was the daytime job of Lance Corporal Jack Jones?

Answer: Butcher

Lance Corporal Jack Jones was portrayed by Clive Dunn throughout the series. His daytime job was that of the town butcher. Jones was famous for volunteering for everything and for his two catchphrases - "They don't like it up 'em" and "Don't panic, don't panic!"
4. Who played the part of Private Joe Walker until 1973?

Answer: James Beck

Private Joe Walker was a black market "spiv" whose activities were disapproved of by Captain Mainwaring, except when Walker was supplying him with whisky, of course!

James Beck played the role of Walker until 1973, when he sadly died due to complications from pancreatitis.
5. What did Captain Mainwaring frequently call Private Pike?

Answer: Stupid boy

Private Frank Pike, played by Ian Lavender, was by far the youngest member of the platoon. He is a mother's boy, whose mum, Mavis, is in a relationship with Sergeant Wilson, whom Pike calls Uncle Arthur. (It is generally assumed that Wilson is really Pike's father.) His immature mishaps regularly lead to Captain Mainwaring calling him "You stupid boy".
6. In which English county were the outdoor sequences of "Dad's Army" filmed?

Answer: Norfolk

Although the series was set in the fictional town of Walmington-on-Sea, which was supposedly located near Eastbourne in Sussex, the outdoor scenes were actually filmed near Thetford in Norfolk, East Anglia. A "Dad's Army" museum opened in the town in 2007.
7. What was the name of the vicar in "Dad's Army", played by Frank Williams?

Answer: Timothy Farthing

Timothy Farthing was the vicar of St Adhelm's Church in Walmington-on-Sea. He is portrayed as a somewhat effeminate character and is frustrated at having to share his office and church hall with both the Home Guard and the Air Raid Precautions squad.

Frank Williams portrayed Farthing throughout the series.
8. Which music hall star sang the "Dad's Army" theme tune: "Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr. Hitler?"?

Answer: Bud Flanagan

Bud Flanagan (real name Chaim Reuben Weintrop) was a music hall star who was half of a famous double act, alongside Chesney Allen. Snatches of a number of his songs can be heard during "Dad's Army" episodes, such as " We're Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line".

The lyrics of the show's opening title song are below:

"Who do you think you are kidding, Mr. Hitler
If you think we're on the run?
We are the boys who will stop your little game!
We are the boys who will make you think again!
'Cause, who do you think you are kidding, Mr. Hitler,
If you think old England's done?
Mr Brown goes off to town on the eight twenty-one,
But he comes home each evening and he's ready with his gun.
'Cause who do you think you are kidding, Mr. Hitler,
If you think old England's done?"
9. In "Dad's Army", what was the nickname that ARP warden Hodges had for Captain Mainwaring?

Answer: Napoleon

ARP warden William Hodges, played by Bill Pertwee, was the archenemy of the Home Guard, particularly Captain Mainwaring. He would frequently be heard to say "Now look here, Napoleon!" when addressing him, and would regularly refer to the platoon as "ruddy hooligans".
10. Which member of the "Dad's Army" platoon resided with his two elderly sisters, Cissy and Dolly?

Answer: Private Godfrey

Private Charles Godfrey, played by Arnold Ridley, lived in a picturesque country cottage along with his two sisters. A very elderly character, he served as the platoon's medical orderly. The other platoon members fell out with him when they learned that he had been a conscientious objector during World War 1, but changed their minds when they find out that he was given a medal for bravery during the Battle of the Somme.
