Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Instead of facing a Detour in the race's first leg, racers instead divided out for what new race mechanic with a dubious twist?

Answer: Fork in the Road

Racers departed from the starting line in Los Angeles with the news that their first leg would contain a Fork in the Road, a spin on the Detour with more consequence. Landing in Hong Kong, they inevitably located this new race mechanic at the Lok Kwan Street Park, choosing between two tasks that would inevitably lead them to the Pit Stop.

The catch was that only seven teams could complete either task (like a limited-station Detour), and one team from each task would be eliminated when they reached the mat in last place from their grouping.

There was, otherwise, no formal Detour in this leg.
2. Of the twelve teams competing in the Detour in Osaka, Japan in Leg 2, how many made mochi?

Answer: Three

Racers found their actual first Detour task at the end of Leg 2 as they raced from Osaka's Dotonburi district to Ohama Park on the coast. There, racers either learned how to make mochi from scratch or they visited a sumo arena to learn how to properly tie a wabashi.

The former task, completed by Courtney and Jasmin, Pops and Jeff, and Melinda and Erika, had them pounding steamed rice and making twelve perfect mochi. Everyone else dealt with details, tying each others' wabashis before forcing a sumo wrestler out of the ring.
3. The 'Fling It' Detour task, which teams attempted in Kyoto in Leg 3, had racers using aim-specific weapons. Which was not one of them?

Answer: Bows and arrows

Visiting the Kyoto Budo Temple for their Detour in Leg 3, racers had to be patient or precise in choosing 'Fold It' or 'Fling It'. While 'Fold It' had teams creating a massive origami crane, 'Fling It' involved a gauntlet of dextrous challenges involving traditional Japanese weaponry as both racers needed to throw three shuriken spikes to hit a target, three throwing stars, and three fukibari, or blowgun darts.

Although many teams attempted the 'Fling It' task, many subsequently switched to 'Fold It' upon realizing the difficulty of the weaponry task. All teams ended up completing 'Fold It'.
4. While most teams completed the 'Penjor' Detour task in Bali in Leg 4, a handful completed 'Pajegan', which had them buying which of these in a small, Indonesian village?

Answer: Fruits

Visiting Penglipuran Village on the island of Bali, racers arrived to find a Detour awaiting them, allowing them to partake in one of two unique, cultural activities taking place. Many teams chose 'Penjor', a task which had them creating massive offerings constructed, meticulously, on bamboo poles that they had to carry through the village. Some, however, chose to complete 'Pajegan', a task that sent them on a shopping trip through the village to purchase unique fruits to place on an offering pedestal to, subsequently, deliver to a local spot.
5. During a surprise U-Turn Vote in Leg 5, how many teams were required to complete both sides of the proceeding Detour in Indonesia?

Answer: Two

Racers visited the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Bali, Indonesia early in Leg 5, and in this 'season of surprises', they were greeted by Phil for the second-ever live U-Turn Vote. The other teams doled out votes to Jonathan and Ana because they used the Driver's Seat in the previous leg as well as Scott and Lori because of their general strength and proficiency.

As such, both teams had to complete both sides of the Detour in this leg; all other teams did the one side or the other.
6. Leg 7 saw another Double U-Turn used in rural Bulgaria. How many teams used it?

Answer: Two

Arriving at the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Sarantsi, Bulgaria after completing their Detour, teams came face-to-face with the race's second Double U-Turn, and this one wasn't a vote-- it was the traditional board. This meant that any two teams could use the U-Turn on a trailing team to force them to return to the Detour and complete the second task. Melinda and Erika did this to hold back Nick and Mike who subsequently U-Turned Han and Holden to protect themselves.
7. Which team was eliminated while at their Detour task in Leg 7?

Answer: Nick and Mike

The Leg 7 Detour, a choice between 'Haystack' and 'Woodstack', initially gave teams the option of a luck-based task or a brute force physical task. In the 'Haystack' task, teams had to hunt through three massive haystacks to locate a small red and white bracelet while in the 'Woodstack' task, teams had to use a backpack and a wagon to transport 200 kilograms of firewood through the nearby village.

As a result of being U-Turned by Melinda and Erika, Nick and Mike arrived at the board after finishing 'Woodstack' and had to return to the hay challenge to complete that as well. Unable to locate their bracelet over six hours of searching, they were met by Phil at the farm there once all other teams had checked into the Pit Stop and they were eliminated from the race without formally closing out the leg.
8. In Naples, Italy in Leg 9, all teams completed the 'Mozzarella' Detour option.

Answer: False

Wandering the streets of Naples, Italy in Leg 9, racers had to work with their hands for their Detour, pursuing either 'Mandolin' or 'Mozzarella', and while most teams chose the latter task, Jonathan and Ana headed for 'Mandolin'.

In 'Mandolin', teams worked with Neapolitan luthiers to create a mandolin, adorning it with finishing embellishments, strings, and accessories to complete the instrument for use. 'Mozzarella', however, had teams braiding cheese into treccia plaits. If they could braid six at the proper weight, they could get their next clue.
9. Racers completing the 'For the Birds' Detour option in Leg 10 (in France) made which of these?

Answer: Nests

Teams left the city of Strasbourg for Scherwiller at the end of Leg 10 and wrapped up the leg with a Detour task that involved working their hands. 'Out to Dry' had racers helping locals wash a tub of laundry, but 'For the Birds' involved learning how to build the foundation of a massive nest designed to be placed on a high spot for migratory storks. Brett and Mark and Alyssa and Josiah learned how to make the nests while Carson and Jack, Han and Holden, and Jonathan and Ana helped with the laundry, and then all of them raced to the Pit Stop.
10. Leg 11 did not contain a Detour clue.

Answer: True

Though racers had to face many choices head-on in this season of "The Amazing Race", this course only contained seven Detours across its twelve legs, omitting the staple task type in Legs 1, 6, 8, 11, and 12. This includes the obvious replacement in Leg 1, wherein racers encountered the first-ever Fork in the Road, which could be considered an elaboration on the Detour concept.

This meant that the last Detour teams would encounter was outside of Strasbourg in Leg 10.
