Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Racers had to provide offerings for a Kukeri ritual in Bulgaria in Leg 7. What did they offer?

Answer: Apples

Taking a midday departure from their Pit Stop in Dubai, teams started Leg 7 with the instruction to head to the airport for a flight to the city of Sofia, Bulgaria, two thousand miles northwest into Eastern Europe. Upon landing, teams collected vehicles for their first self-driving test of the race and headed to the village square in the small town of Negushevo.

In Negushevo, racers located their clue box and were told to help locals ward off evil spirits. Joining a Kukeri ritual, the teams had to gather apples as an offering and deliver them to the nearby altar to get their next clue, sending them to the village of Osoitsa.

In Osoitsa, racers located the local library and searched through the books there for another clue.
2. Racers completing the 'Haystack' Detour task in Leg 7 had to locate which of these, buried in piles of hay?

Answer: Bracelet

Opening their clues in the Osoitsa Village Library, racers found a Detour waiting for them. With speed being of the essence, racers selected either 'Haystack' or 'Woodstack'. In the former, racers had to find a metaphorical needle in a haystack, searching amongst three massive piles of hay in a local field for a single red and white Martenitsa bracelet. In the latter, teams instead joined locals in labouring near the woods, transporting 200 kilograms of wood to a local home.

Jonathan and Ana, Alyssa and Josiah, and Melinda and Erika selected 'Haystack' while Brett and Mark, Han and Holden, Nick and Mike, and Carson and Jack chose 'Woodstack'.
3. Which team, amongst these, used the Double U-Turn found in Bulgaria?

Answer: Melinda and Erika

After the Detour, teams received clues directing them to travel on foot to the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Sarantsi. There, racers found the next clue box, and of equal importance, the Double U-Turn board. Here, racers could force trailing teams to complete the opposite side of the Detour before continuing racing-- something Melinda and Erika did to slow down Nick and Mike, and then Nick and Mike used to hinder Han and Holden.

When teams passed through here, they could then return to their vehicles and proceed to the town of Belopoptsi to locate Snezha's Farm and their next clue.
4. The Road Block encountered in Leg 7 had racers milking which of these animals in a Bulgarian village?

Answer: Sheep

Reaching Snezha's Farm, racers located their clue box on the edge of a pasture and needed to choose someone to 'fill 'er up'. For this Road Block, racers had to embark on a quest for good health and long life by joining the locals in milking sheep to make Bulgarian yogurt.

After collecting half a litre of sheep's milk, they could trade the drink for a bowl of finished yogurt which, when finished, would result in their last clue for the leg.
5. Which team failed to reach the Pit Stop at the end of Leg 7?

Answer: Nick and Mike

Racing out from the Road Block, racers had to drive themselves to the village of Elin Pelin to locate their Pit Stop in the village square. Alyssa and Josiah, who had a lucky pull in the Detour and maintained a lead for the remainder of the leg, won an Expedia prize package sending them on a five-night trip for two to Marrakech, Morocco.

Although Carson and Jack fell several hours behind, it was the Double U-Turn that determined the fate of the last teams. Nick and Mike, U-Turned by Melinda and Erika, had to go back to the 'Haystack' Detour and search for their bracelet to keep racing. Unfortunately, they never found it, remaining in the field until after the other teams had checked in. Phil arrived at the field to eliminate them in seventh place without their hitting the Pit Stop mat.
6. Which team won the race's second Express Pass, walking burning coals in Leg 8?

Answer: Alyssa and Josiah

Leaving Elin Pelin at the start of Leg 8, racers needed to drive to Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, to find their next clue at Lake Ariana, specifically at Borisova Gradina, twenty-five miles from their Pit Start.

But one team would also have the opportunity to branch off at this early point, pursuing the Express Pass waiting at Fabrica 126. For this, racers had to walk barefoot over hot coals as part of a Nestinarstvo ritual. Alyssa and Josiah, who started the leg in first, used their top position to take this risk, collecting the Express Pass before rejoining the other teams. They would be able to use it up until the end of Leg 10.
7. Arriving in Sofia, Bulgaria in Leg 8, teams had to search the waters of Lake Ariana for which of these?

Answer: Crucifixes

Reaching the clue box at Lake Ariana, teams joined the locals in partaking in an Eastern Orthodox tradition on Jordan Day. To do this, they needed to hop into the shallow waters of Lake Ariana to locate a golden crucifix in the lakebed, under the water, thrown by an observing priest. If they could collect it, they could return it to the shore and hand it over to the priest, and trade for their next clue.

Next, teams would need to make their way to Russian Monument Square, but this clue would come with the key information that they would not be able to travel by taxi, or drive themselves, for the remainder of Leg 8.
8. Teams needed to perform translation services at Sofia University in Leg 8, converting a text into English, but from which alphabet?

Answer: Cyrillic

Reaching Russian Monument Square, teams could locate and open the doors of an innocuous, marked klek shop to receive another Route Info clue, and this one had them proceeding on foot or by public transit to the St. Kliment Ohridski Central Library at Sofia University. Once they arrived, they would be provided a Cyrillic cypher and be shown a Bible verse from an ancient book. If they could properly translate the text (reading "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word"), a librarian would give them their next clue.
9. The Road Block teams found at the end of Leg 8 had which prompt?

Answer: 'Who wants to step back in time?'

Leaving Sofia University, teams made their way to the sculpture garden at the Museum of Socialist Art to find another clue box, this one sending them to the Central Military clue to find their Road Block for this leg.

For this Road Block, each team chose one racer to 'step back in time', joining a dance troupe to learn the horo, the national dance of Bulgaria. Mark, Josiah, Ana, Jack, Holden, and Melinda had to get all the steps right in the complicated routine to get their final clue for the leg.
10. Which team, placing last with penalties upon hitting the Pit Stop, was eliminated at the end of Leg 8 in Sofia, Bulgaria?

Answer: Melinda and Erika

The clue teams received upon completing the Road Block directed them to locate the race's eighth Pit Stop mat in front of Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Catholic churches in the world. Brett and Mark kept pole position while Alyssa and Josiah took the Express Pass, and it allowed them to coast to a win and a prize of $7,500 USD each.

At the end of the leg, Melinda and Erika hit the mat having accidentally misread an earlier clue prohibiting them from using taxis for the remainder of the leg. Though they would have been penalized for doing so, their last place arrival on the mat sealed their fate and they were eliminated from the race in sixth place.
