England, Scotland or LA Trivia Quiz

Three Streaming Series

I've been binge-watching some of the newer thrillers and police shows on a variety of streaming services, and thought it might be fun to sort out some of the characters. Are they in "Slow Horses" (England), "Dept. Q" (Scotland) or "Ballard" (LA)?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jackson Lamb

Answer: Slow Horses

Jackson Lamb, played by Gary Oldman, is the scruffiest, most disreputable-looking agent one could ever hope to meet. He's also a really good guy to have on your side in a pinch. Lamb is nominally the leader of the Slow Horses, as the British intelligence agents who find themselves relegated to working at Slough House are known. Each has blotted their copybook in some manner, and are essentially expendable.

Beginning in 2022, we are introduced to the members of this dysfunctional group, as well as to those who oppose them, both outside and inside their agency.
2. River Cartwright

Answer: Slow Horses

River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) can be considered a 'legacy' MI5 agent, having been raised by senior agent (retired) David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce). This does not always work in River's favour, as not all members of the agency view either Cartwright in a favourable light.

At one point River goes walkabout on the continent, and neither his existence nor his whereabouts are clear, though this does resolve itself by the season's end.
3. Diana Taverner

Answer: Slow Horses

Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) is a senior member of MI5's hierarchy, sometimes referred to as "Second Desk". Though not a Slow Horse herself, she shows interest in their activities and well-being, sometimes meeting Lamb secretly to discuss the situation (whatever it might be at the time).

She is usually calm and collected, well-dressed (in contrast to Lamb) and has aspirations to advance in the agency.
4. Catherine Standish

Answer: Slow Horses

Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) is usually referred to simply as "Standish", and is of a similar vintage as Lamb. Her job is that of administrator rather than agent, though her alcoholism interferes even with that role. She is, however, loyal (sometimes to a fault) and is missed by the other occupants of Slough House when she moves on.

Those other occupants have included the obnoxious tech guy, Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) and agents Marcus Longridge (Kadiff Kirwan) and Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar).
5. Carl Morck

Answer: Dept. Q

Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) is an Edinburgh detective who is recovering from an incident in which he was wounded, his partner paralyzed and a young constable killed. We see this incident from various angles at different times in the series. When he returns to work he is assigned to Dept. Q, a cold case squad located in a rather inhospitable basement. We are also shown parts of Morck's home life, with his stepson and a lodger.

The series is based on a series of Danish crime novels, by Jussi Adler-Olsen.
6. Merritt Lingard

Answer: Dept. Q

Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie) is the victim in the first cold case taken on by Dept. Q. She is a prominent lawyer and prosecutor who goes missing four years before her case is reopened by Morck and his team. We are introduced to her and her brother in flashbacks, and are also let in on what has happened to her (and where she is) long before the detectives work it out.

Exactly who is behind what happens to Merritt, however, remains a mystery until almost the very end.
7. Akram Salim

Answer: Dept. Q

Akram Salim (Alexej Manvelov) is a civilian employed by Dept. Q with experience as a police officer in his native Syria. His back story is mysterious, as he doesn't give much away about his duties in his homeland, though he does display knowledge of 'alternate' ways of extracting information from suspects. He's a good person to have on your side, if you know what I mean.
8. Dr. Rachel Irving

Answer: Dept. Q

Dr. Rachel Irving (Kelly Macdonald) is the police therapist with whom Carl is supposed to meet in order to work through his reactions to the incident in which he and his partner were injured, and a young policeman died. He attends sporadically, as he doesn't feel they do much good - though he does rather like Dr. Irving.

Their relationship is rather odd for a doctor/patient dynamic, and when Carl is assigned a different therapist he balks.
9. Thomas Laffont

Answer: Ballard

Thomas Laffont (John Carroll Lynch) is a retired LAPD detective, assigned to assist Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), who heads up a cold case unit, located in a basement. The two have known each other a long time, and Laffont is a mature and steady member of the team.

"Ballard" is based on the books by Michael Connelly, who also created "Bosch", "Bosch: Legacy" and "The Lincoln Lawyer". Detective Ballard knows Bosch (Titus Welliver), and he turns up in her show more than once, as do other regulars from his world.
10. Ted Rawls

Answer: Ballard

Ted Rawls (Michael Mosley) begins as something of a plant in the cold case unit, with an agenda supported by Councilman Jake Pearlman (Noah Bean), whose sister's murder is one of the cases the team investigates. He experiences some growth, both as a reserve officer and a human being as the story progresses, becoming more likeable as time goes on.
11. Tutu

Answer: Ballard

Tutu (Amy Hill) is Ballard's grandmother, with whom the detective lives. Their home is near the beach, where Ballard learned to surf as a child, taught by her father. Ballard is haunted by her father's accidental death whilst surfing, especially as his body was never found. Tutu encourages Ballard to build a surfboard, like her father's, as a form of therapy. Ballard initially balks at the idea, but eventually takes on the task.
12. Samira Parker

Answer: Ballard

Samira Parker (Courtney Taylor) is an ex-LAPD officer, working security at a night club, who is recruited by Ballard to join the cold case unit. The two work well together, and eventually learn that both have had an unsavoury experience with an otherwise respected homicide detective.

Other members of the team are legal intern Martina (Victoria Moroles) and volunteer Colleen (Rebecca Field).
