Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does "Gankutsuou" mean in Japanese?

Answer: The king of the cavern

Luigi Vampa gives the translation in the second episode when the Count appears and calls himself "Gankutsuou" for the first time. Gankutsuou is a spirit that offers Edmond power and knowledge in exchange for Edmond's body and soul. Edmond accepts in order to escape and get revenge on those who wrongly sent him to prison. "Gankutsuou" is also the title of the book in Japan; "The Count of Monte Cristo" would be translated literally as "Monte Kurisuto Hakushaku."
2. The series begins with Albert and Franz at the carnival. In the book, this happens in Rome. Where is the carnival in the series?

Answer: Luna

The series primarily follows Albert instead of the Count. Thus, we begin at the part of the story where he comes in. Luna is a city on the moon. "Luna" means "moon" in Latin.
3. At the carnival, the Count of Monte Cristo drops a watch, which Albert picks up; he is later given it as a gift. What does the watch say?

Answer: "Death is certain, its hour uncertain"

It comes from the Latin proverb "Mors certa, hora incerta," which is carved inside the watch. It turns out that the watch is bugged--the Count is using it to spy on Albert. "Time is eternity begun" was said by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. "Therefore keep watch" comes from Matthew 25:13, and the source for the Latin proverb "Every hour wounds" is unknown.
4. Which of these is not a feature of the Count's appearance?

Answer: Twelve fingers

The unusual appearance comes from Gankutsuou. The Count also has blue marbled hair, in contrast to Edmond's brown hair, and his body is crystalline.
5. Why does Albert get into a duel with Maximilian?

Answer: Maximilian believes that Albert's parents did not marry for love, and Albert wants to defend their marraige.

Maximilian calls the aristocracy of Paris corrupt because they arrange marriages for profit and convenience instead of love; Albert takes offense and defends his parents. They fight with swords in the Marseilles room of the Count's mansion. Albert fights while wearing a pirate outfit--a black hat, white baggy pants, a pistol, and a long coat that says "Pirate Albert."
6. The Count gives a poisoned ring to Heloise de Villefort, which she uses to try to off family members. Who is not poisoned?

Answer: Noirtier

Her main target is Valentine, whose death means that Heloise's son gets the inheritance; Albert merely drank from the wrong pitcher at dinner. Valentine and Albert only get sick, but the servant Barrois dies. Heloise herself is also poisoned and has a mental breakdown. Valentine survives the poisoning in the book because she had been building up an immunity to it; Noirtier takes it as a drug in his lemonade and has her drink small amounts of it along with him to protect her, as he knows of the poisoning plot.
7. Franz starts to investigate the Count after he hears a servant call him "Gankutsuou".

Answer: True

Hearing that name and seeing the purple manifestation of Gankutsuou on the Count's forehead would arouse suspicion in anyone. Franz then undertakes an investigation to see just what's going on with the Count, which leads him to discover not only the nature of the demon, but the Count's true name and history.
8. At his house in Auteuil, the Count has the guests divide into groups and go through his mansion to seek a certain room. What is the "prize" that the first team to reach the room receives?

Answer: The box in which Villefort buried his illegitimate son

Madame Danglars faints when she sees it, as she is also in the same room where she gave birth to the child. Of course, the child isn't dead; the Count gets him out of prison to help the Count wreck havoc on his enemies. The other articles all turn up at various points in the series.
9. Danglars breaks Eugenie's engagement with Albert and engages her to Andrea Cavalcanti without her permission. In what way is Andrea related to her?

Answer: Half brother

He is the child of Madame Danglars and Gerard de Villefort. He is also called Benedetto. His fate in the book is unknown, whereas in the series, he ends up as a wanted criminal everywhere.
10. When Haydée denounces Fernand for invading Janina and destroying her family's lives, Mercedes asks her if she can prove what she has said. What does Haydée show as proof of Fernand's actions?

Answer: The slave brand on her neck

This brand is usually hidden beneath her necklace. Her speech causes a scandal that leads to Albert discovering the Count's true motives.
11. How does Franz keep Albert from dueling the Count?

Answer: He drugs Albert and fights the Count in his place.

As they fight in mecha, no one can tell that Franz has taken Albert's place. This marks a departure from the book, where Mercedes successfully persuades the Count to spare her son in the duel. The next day, Albert apologizes to the Count instead of fighting him, then departs France to become a soldier.
12. After his bank collapses and Eugenie leaves for New York, what does Danglars do?

Answer: He leaves Earth but ends up stranded in space on a ship full of gold.

In the novel, the Count starves Danglars out of most of his fortune and then lets him go with the 50,000 francs he has left. Here, the Count abandons Danglars on a ship that is filled with the one substance that he truly loves. It is implied that he dies of starvation or dehydration, as no one is seen rescuing him and he does not appear in the epilogue.
13. The following characters all die in the novel. However, all of them are spared in the series except for one. Who still dies in the series?

Answer: Fernand

He dies in the same manner in which he does in the book--he shoots himself. Caderousse ends up as a wanted criminal, and the final fates of the Villeforts are unknown; however, they are seen escaping the Count's house with Ali near the end. Franz, Danglars, and the Count/Edmond do not die in the novel, but they do in the series.
14. What is Albert's profession at the end of the series?

Answer: An ambassador's aide

Albert has spent years studying and has succeeded on his own merits. He also has shaken off his father's name and taken his mother's name, Herrera. During the closing credits, we see Albert running to the church where Eugenie plays the piano, but we do not see the reunion.
15. Who sings the opening and ending themes?

Answer: Jean-Jacques Burnel

Jean-Jacques Burnel is of the band The Stranglers. The opening is a romantic ballad echoing Edmond's old life; the ending theme is a much faster song embodying his revenge. The opening theme plays out in its entirety over the closing credits of the final episode.
