Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene, what song is Margaret playing on her phonograph?

Answer: "I'm in the Mood for Love"

"I'm in the Mood for Love" was written in 1938 by Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh. Of course, Margaret was trying to set the ambiance for Frank's arrival.
2. What injury did Frank sustain when dancing with Margaret?

Answer: threw his back out

When Frank dips Margaret, he can't straighten up again. He mentions this is a chronic problem for him. Margaret hails the surgeons as they pass her tent. She gives an elaborate and deceptive explanation of what happened to Frank to allay the suspicion that he was with her, but she fools no one.
3. When Hawkeye is first seen, who is he with?

Answer: Nancy

Only referred to as Nancy, the nurse is played by Lynette Mettey. She appeared in six "M*A*S*H" episodes, three in season one as Nancy Griffin, one in season two as Shelia Anderson, one in season three as Nurse Baker, and one in season four as Nurse Able. She also appeared in other TV shows, mainly as a guest star.
4. Hawkeye's childhood friend, Tommy Gillis, pays a visit. What job did he have as a civilian?

Answer: journalist

It is revealed in their conversation that Gillis is writing his memoirs of the war entitled "You Never Hear the Bullet". He wants to be where the fighting is so he can experience the war firsthand rather than be a war correspondent from a distance. He is portrayed by character actor James Callahan (1930-2007), who did dozens of guest roles on TV shows.
5. What does Tommy say when Hawkeye invites him back?

Answer: "We'll split a nurse."

Tragically, Gillis is fatally wounded in a battle. When brought into the OR, he tells Hawkeye just before passing that he did hear the bullet and laments on the title of his memoir. Hawkeye says, "You'll just have to change the name to 'Sometimes You Hear Bullet'".
6. Who wrote this episode?

Answer: Carl Kleinschmitt

Kleinschmitt (1937-2022) was nominated for an Emmy for this "M*A*S*H" episode. He did win an Emmy for "The Dick Van Dyke Show" episode "Br-ooom, Br-ooom". Other TV shows to his credit are "The Love Boat", "1st in Ten", and "Welcome Back, Kotter" among a handful of others.
7. Two soldiers get in a fight in the post-op ward. What were they fighting about?

Answer: a salami

One accused the other of stealing his salami. Hawkeye promises to get both of them a salami if they stop fighting. This seems to appease them.
8. When Father Mulcahy enters the OR, he is told he isn't needed that day because the injuries are mild. What does he say?

Answer: "Can I interest you in a get well prayer?"

Always ready with a prayer or last rights, Mulcahy is often seen in the OR.
9. Ron Howard plays a young soldier who is stricken with appendicitis. What does he tell everyone his name is?

Answer: Wendell

Hawkeye operates on him and is struck by how young he looks and surmises he lied about his age to get into the Army. In their subsequent conversation, the boy says he doesn't want to stay in the 4077th to fully recover and is anxious to get back to the fighting so he can win a medal to show to his girlfriend.

It also comes out that he did lie about his age, used his brother's ID to enlist, and says his real name is Walter.
10. What medal does Hawkeye give to Walter?

Answer: Purple Heart

Frank had applied for a Purple Heart because of his injury while dancing with Margaret. Hawkeye doesn't feel Frank merited it, and gives it to Walter so he can return home a hero and not risk going back into battle. In its place, Hawkeye substitutes an earring when it is presented to Frank by Henry.
